    Re: Glove / Map Box

The next step is to clean all the filler material off of the part. Most of is is just scraped off with a putty knife.
Then we put it in the waterjet cabinet to do a really good job of cleaning off the filler material.

I know the size of the boxes, roughly and there are a few dimensions in a very bad drawing I have from a Taylorcraft service manual. What I do not know and can't tell is were the boxes designed to fit inside the flanges on the openings of the instrument panel or did they fit on the outside of those 90 deg flanges.

If anyone knows I would appreciate your input. I have Jole's CD with all the pictures of his restoration but can't tell. Bob Lees made one but it does not show them installed.

This kind of detail stuff is killing me.

Does anyone have some plans/diagram for building a glove box. (Dr. Wenglarz fixed me up with doors and handles.

The metal flange ends up inside the box (at least on mine). There were at least two different dimensions of boxes. If you can post the height and width of the doors or openings I can see if I have a pattern for yours.

It is CRITICAL that you make sure the box can't deflect towards the gear at the front of the control wheel shaft, ESPECIALLY if you are using a metal box!!! If the box bends towards the gear it can prevent you from pulling back on the controls. With the cardboard boxes you at least had a chance of crushing the box. You need to put an Adel clamp on the box with the ring of the clamp around the tube just under the box to keep them from interfering with the controls.

I could be wrong, but I think the boxes were flocked hat shelf-type board folded and riveted together. I don't have any originals.

Scroll about halfway down to pic 27 and the next couple. I think the box is about 5x7 but you should take the dimensions from the openings in your instrument panel.
              I think I went 11" deep.

I have new OEM f-19 boxes and doors, the boxes were thin plastic sheet that was stapled together and the doors have spring loaded hinges...and I had the source for the hinges but cant remember who they were...Oh yeah, Guden hinges. Tim

The box material changed over the years. I have a pre-war that is paper hat shelf material with black embossed leather finish. It is NOT even a little water resistant! I also have an original 1945 box that is a dark grey plastic with similar embossed surface. Much more water resistant but brittle and cracks like mad if you flex it even a tiny bit. It also seems to have shrunken a bit. If not for the marks in the plastic I would have thought it went inside the metal opening flanges instead of the flanges going inside the box.
By the way, they have a hole for the clamp to hold the box to the side and keep it away from the control chain gear. DO NOT LEAVE THE CLAMP OFF!!!! I made a quick aluminum box and wanted to see if I could crush it with the controls. It was very thin and with the leverage on the wheel in the cockpit I couldn't. Maybe if I was staring death in the face I might have been able, but I wouldn't want to test it for real.

                    Hank,
What do you use for a B battery when you operate your Airboy? I have one and would like to see if it works.
Did you make a B battery power supply or did you find a battery somewhere that will work?
                    Thanks.
                    Best Regards,

As I remember I used a power supply to replace each battery. It did NOT have very good output, but then I was using a REALLY old headset!

I have seen the flocked cardboard, plain cardboard, and have never cared for them. Years ago I figured out the early bonanza boxes was the same size and a perfect fit.

That would be great. I can make a drawing for anyone else who may come across an Airboy and want to put it in. I also have a buck for the pre and post war glove box doors if needed. I made my new ones from aluminum instead of steel (MUCH easier to form and if you need the strength of a steel door maybe you should restore railroad locomotives not airplanes!) Anybody remember who I gave the bar type box door handle mold to? I need to cast a couple more. I used the wrong resin and they got brittle.

It's my understanding that the glove box handle is the same one that was used on the dash cigarette tray on a '40 chevrolet. Can be ordered from WWW.chevsofthe40s.com part # 604622
