A Good Day

For those that don't know my son Nick is the young man who has been doing the Taylorcraft calendar the past 3 years.Yesterday was Nick's 16th birthday. He had bid plans that winds gusting to around 25 MPH kind of snarled, but today was a good day. After hours of riding around with me in my dad's and his grandpa's 1941 Deluxe Taylorcraft he was finally able to make his first solo flight in an airplane. T he solo flight was just topping on the cake. earlier in the day he passed his private pilot glider checkride.

Congrats to Nick, and also to Tom, it's a special moment when you solo your child. It will be 33 years ago in April when I soloed my son in my dad's Taylorcraft.

This is restoration number 2, and it was completed a year and a half ago. It was damaged back in 2006 when it was struck by another airplane.

New pilot there's hope for the future. Not many starts up here ion Alaska despite the increasing demand for commercial ops and maintenance personnel. Ten's of thousands for the training and ratings today might be a factor. Still some will follow their dream in college with no hope for a job when done.

Congratulations Son and Father. I remember my Grandsons big days. Fortunately wind was not a factor and he soloed on his 16th Birthday. He was down for the month of December, he lives in Alaska now, and we were able to get him his Commercial rating.
