  • Pre war aileron brackets

Im replacing my magnesium aileron bracket with pre war steel brackets, the magnesium brackets have a phenolic cable guide attached to them, the pre war do not . My IA wants to know if it is ok not to have a guide as the magnesium brackets do . Any help would be appreciated.

would be simple enough to fabricate and add one.

At the very least I think you'll want some form of rub pad on top of the hinge. The cable runs are long and not that much cable tension so it is likely the cables will contact the hinge. An alternative may be to add support for the cable at one or more of the ribs.

Since you have spacers under the bracket anyway make a spacer out of a angled piece that you can attach a cable guide too.

Thanks for the info , Im just a little surprised that the prewar airplanes did not have something in place. I may be missing something. Will be modifying it for a phenolic guide.

The pre war used built up ribs. I don't have easy access to one right now, but think it was attached to the rib instead.

I think when I did mine I friction taped a piece of phenolic to the top of the bracket to prevent rubbing

Angle of incidence is also different between pre and post war airplanes which may affect cable position, but I have not actually verified it myself. Tim

Dr. Tim do you have those AOI numbers? Did they change the wing to fuselage mounts to achieve that?

Gary, not off the top of my head, search on the forum for the real numbers. Tim

The info I've read so far was 3.8* AOI which was the best L/D ratio for the 23012 airfoil in the 1930's according to NACA documents. Maybe Taylorcraft decided to change but I suspect ?. Please convince me.

Hope all is well with you and your family. Alaska awaits your return Tim.
