  • First Solo

My son Ben made his first solo flight in my dad's '41 Deluxe on July 8th. He is the third generation of the Baker family to fly this airplane. Now to get his Private finished up in between school and work.

Very nice! Good to see a new pilot in training. Not as common as it used to be.

        Excellent news! Well done Ben.

Three successive generations to solo in the same aircraft? That must be pretty rare!

Three generations to make solo flights in the same airplane, but Ben was the first to make his first solo flight in the airplane.

I understand the significance of clipping the tail feathers, but as an instructor that is not a tradition I have carried on.

You're already ahead of most pilots.... you know what your feet are for! No frise ailerons, no differential ailerons, no rudder interconnect, springs, weights or any other artificial assist, just your hands and feet connected to the flight controls. No better experience for a new pilot. Well done!

Congratulations Ben! I can't think of a better airplane to get your first solo in than that '41 too.
