  • Shinn Wheel Washers

    Hi All
Looking for information/photos of the Shinn wheel/axle break-out.

The Taylorcraft parts manual shows two washers inboard of the inboard wheel bearing, and two washers outboard of the outboard wheel bearing, one of which is the tab washer directly under the nut.

I'm guessing one of the washers is actually a spacer that puts the wheel in the right location on the axle and the other two are dust/grease shields?

Be a while before I need them but I appear to be missing some parts. I have the two tab washers, and I think I have one of each of the inboard and outboard dust washers. Missing the inboard spacers and two dust shields I think.

Would be a great help if I knew what these parts look like.

    thanks
    Scott

    Scott,
When I ordered some replacement parts for Shinn brakes, Skybound sent me a photo breakdown of all the parts and their part numbers. Since they are the ones that have the parts as well, give them a call: 1-770-446-6797. They are in Doraville, Georgia.

It is not a spacer, just a thin shield washer.

I have only ever seen one there inboard of the inboard bearing.

However they are so thin that I doubt that two would cause any harm.

There is a thin washer to keep the brake mounting screws from backing out, and a dust shield that goes in the wheel.

that makes sense, I hadn't realized they were the two items that were in play

So like an IPC (Illustrated Parts Catalogue)?

As an aside, the brake mounting screws are NOT the usual AN type. They have a different countersink angle.

so are they 82* instead of 100* countersinks?

This info is from a posting quite a while back...from Rob Lees:

The brake plate assembly is screwed to the gear leg using unusual 82 degee countersunk screws.
It would appear that the original slotted screws are not available, but I found a source of
cross-head screws in stainless from an approved source.
The part numbers for the approved, stainless structural countersunk screws is
                      MS51960-65 (or 10-32 UNF-2A x 1/2 PH FLT HD Machine Screw)
                      They are available from:
                      Alabama Aerospace Div,
                      102 Skylab Drive,

I've got a bag of those screws, had to order 100 to get what I wanted. They are the correct ones for mounting the brakes.
                          Cheers,
                          Marty

I would be happy to buy a couple of dozen from you.

I think I probably have the spacers/washers, I just don't know what they look like. The parts manual definitely shows two "washers" inboard and two outboard. My wheels show previous damage consistent with someone neglecting to install at least one of the inboard washers ie the wheel casting contacting the brake mount/mechanism.
