  • SCAT Ducting

N44305's usual short and to the point, let's get back to the flying, annual inspection yesterday was rudely interrupted by the discovery of pinholes in the exhaust pipes (both sides) which, in the case of the right side, were readily turned into finger sized holes with a little digital pressure. In addition to the revelation of having to move the engine and mount away from the firewall to remove that dang one piece assembly, the old through-bolted flexible metal ductwork was a bit of a PITA, too.
No reason not to replace that with SCAT ducting, is there?

    Re: SCAT Ducting

All of mine have been Scat, and that is all I have seen on these. Unless you are a slave to correctness as I believe they were that way from the factory, (with metal).
    Cheers,

Mine still has the metal stuff and I really like it. Had some bad experiences with SCAT Tube that didn't have the wire secured properly. The metal tube is strong as, well, metal.

Anyone know of someplace to still get the metal stuff? You guys know I am nuts for originality. I fixed some of it for the 41 like new. Photos are before I finished cleaning it up. Wanted to be sure it would fit and seal first.

Scat, Skeet, Cat, Ceet are the 4 types of flexible tubing, the skeet is the lined tubing that I like to use, it has the silicon liner in it that keeps the wire from moving. Tim

Wag Aero or Univair one or the other has the metal ducting, and maybe both do.

I seem to recall an advisory about skeet. Ok for cabin heat but not carb heat/intake. This is because the inner liner is prone to collapse. Had this happen to me on takeoff in a beach sundowner which has a short duct from the cowl to the carb. Inner liner collapsed and the engine died. I pulled the throttle back and carb heat on before the prop stopped and things came back to life but that's and experience we can live without.

Using scat, make sure the wire ends up under the clamps at both ends (ie ensure both the tube and the wire are secured over the flange) and the wire can't really go anywhere.

I usually just cut the wire back a few inches, put a bend in it and hook it up. I hate dickn with the wire, it sometimes dents the tube you are attaching it to. Tim

Running a bead of Silicon ( RTV) will help secure the outer string & prolong the life.

The exhaust system replacement from WagAero bolted on very readily, much smoother than anticipated. We also took the opportunity to replace the elevator and rudder bushings, which also went smoothly,

                          Re: SCAT Ducting

I'm going to close this thread temporarily, because we've migrated from "Scat tubing" to "Trim Fairleads", the subjects of which deserve separating.

I will endeavour to split the two subjects.

                          Rob

I hope that's worked. If I might beg jmvolpp's permission, keep this thread about SCAT tubing and the other one on trim stuff.

                          Best regards,
                          Rob
