I just have a paper pattern, but it would be simple to make up. Draw a 4.25" circle, and then a 1.125" inner circle. From the center mark 3 120 degree radials. From the radial lines measure 9/32" on each side to make a 9/16" leg. Trim the legs to the inner circle. On the ends of the legs bend a 1/2" flat and drill a hole in the centers of the flats for the screws. In the center circle I would add a nut plate or riv-nut for the center screw.

      Re: Hubcaps

The covers rest on the outer edge of the wheel, as shown in both of the Shinn wheels pictured, not the inside radius of the wheel edge!

Hank mentioned his did not fit, is this what he is referring to?

Note the holes in the ridges mentioned by Tom! What type of fastener is used to mount the bracket to the wheel? (rivets, screws)

        Re: Hubcaps

I have some NOS L2/L3 center hole style hubcaps. none of them have the wire roll edge. I also have at least one bracket here at the shop I use as a pattern. If you need them I will send them out.

          Re: Hubcaps

The bracket is held on with three small sheet metal screws.

The L-2 hubcaps I had I thought had the rolled edge. I will look at my friend's L-2 to confirm.

Mike, I'm not sure but I thought I got my L-2 caps from you, but cannot remember....
          Cheers,

All that I have seen and thought to be original have a rolled edge, but I don't think it has wire in it. Tom

the ones I have are not rolled, and are already painted OD. I think they have an L3 part number ink stamped on them, but they fit just the same

                    Forrest,

Those rolled caps didn't fit, not enough depth to them. They are at my friends hangar, he has an L-2, too, (they didn't fit his either). We were going to see if they would fit his recently restored PT-22. They were the ones made by someone made for you, not originals. Nicely done, just didn't work. I was going to drag them back out to you this July...

You are just going to town with the scans, aren't you!!!
                    Cheers,
                    Marty

                      Re: Hubcaps

The inside radius of the outer edge of the two Shinn wheel examples varies, as castings normally do. I would assume that's why the hubcaps were designed to rest on the outer edge of the wheel?

I plan to have the spinning mandrel machined from steel. Are the hubcaps that I posted pictures of, desirable; "rolled edge and rest on the outer edge of the wheel"?

                        Re: Hubcaps

I cut one of the covers in half, no wire rolled in the beaded edge (false wire edge).

I'll take a set. Maybe two sets.

Anyone know where I can get all 6 of the little finger nuts that attach to the wheel for cap attachment? (I have no idea what these are called)

                          Thanks,

I think Skybound used to have them (deep castellated nuts)...maybe they still do.

                              hmm...

                              Nice welds!

I enjoy just looking at them.

                              Maybe that should worry me.
