Oh boy yes. The Experimental part does give me moe lattitude buuuuuut real world always gives way ...... hell it is cold and icy now here in sc NOW I know why the EAA did so well in WISC nothing else to do.... (before the information age)
I figured as much but I was just as bored since I was here putting in my two cents as well. I guess I'm just a little bias where the T-craft is concerned as it's the only plane I've ever flown really. I have flown a cessna a couple times but never took off or landed it and honestly it was a tri gear and it had NO rudder. Hard to fly with just my hands not my feet. It was a 172, give me a taildragger anyday. LOL
The streamlined wires might look nice but they are more prone to breaking. A little ding on one of the thinned edges can set up a stress point and cause failure . If you have them on early Pipers they have to be inspected at least anually or replaced with the round wires. The good part is in all of the failures I have seen the loose end messed up the fabric but it didnt bring the plane down.
The nice thing about tail wires is horizontal tails generally lift DOWN. The wires most likely to be corroded, get dings and NOT be inspected as well are the bottom ones (the ones NOT in tension most of the time). I would expect many more lower wires than upper have failed and since the top wires take the most load, the planes haven't been brought down.
For once we get lucky, but I wouldn't push it. A flair with a broken upper wire could easily result in the stab bending down and a bunt into the ground. A really bad day!

Here is a closeup of the Spacewalker landing gerar. Would be easy to install on my L-2 and could be covered to look stock. If anyone knows of drawings it would be appreciated.

Comparing those springs to the ones used on a formula racer (say 1100 lbs spread over 4 springs) makes the size look totally inadequate. Tell me I am missing something here.

Don't know the specifications on these springs but the Spacewalker has a max gross of 1450 pounds. My L-2 has max gross of 1300. I like this setup because it eliminates the bungies. Spring size could be adjusted as necessary. If I could get drawings I could figure out how to make them and test application. My L-2 is not flyable right now so it would be a good time to experiment.

There was somebody in Alaska the had a set up for the Super cubs using visco-elastic disk stacked together. They had a booth at Oshkosh a few years ago. I think they also had a replacement for the Taylorcraft tail brace wires. Tom
the good suspension is aoss it is varying thickness of plastic disk to tune in the exact fell you like. very popular in supercub world. check out these on www.supercub.org lots of discussion
There have been Taylorcrafts with spring steel & carbon fiber Taylorcraft looked at the Wittman Tailwind way back in the 40's and had ideas ready if needed.
Around here we had the sketches made up to solve a problem that never existed : WE designed a retractable landing gear for a Bensen B-8M "Gyrocopter".

Kevin i couldn,t have said it any better, your correct i own a 170B, a cub, and a Taylorcraft ,your correct pilots come in to fast, bounce then blame the Aircraft.

Or God forbid one of those suck and blow flying blow torches!!!!! (except Naval Aviators.....and a few of Uncle Sams Misguided Children. They get a pass and don't bounce anyway, they ALWAYS approach way too fast and then do a controlled crash)
