Yup. Big difference. I will probably go with the slicks as I am hearing here that their standard leads have a lot of give in the end for the short shielded plugs. Just hope they are not rubbing the cowl as described above

Be careful with harnesses. Aircraft spruce sells a slick harness that has about a 1/2" metal sleeve where it comes out of the mag cap. It wont fit because it hits the firewall on my 65 short mount. Might be different on an 85-12

Wow tight as I thought! How long ago did you purchase them?

I think it was around January…
When Ryan Johnson installed them he said he had to loosen the engine to get the mag gear into the back case…otherwise no issues I believe

You could always get the cowl bumps from univair and use those.

You had pictured in this post what appears to be a BC12 or BC12 D with an 85 and what looks to be Champ Exhaust. I see the original gasculator stil on the mount. Besides for the extra hole did you otherwise modify the lower coweling? I notice only one heat muff and the perhaps is where the problem arises

You can form the upper cowl so it doesnt need the bumps and use a REM37BY plug...

Jim, an alternate to consider is what Dad did on the restoration in '99. No bumps but cutouts for the top plugs.
It has and still does run oil temps 50 deg F over ambient. Engine was overhauled at 2000 hours So it "made" TBO. I have 550+ hours on the new motor in same configuration.

Attached is a ramp photo, zoom and you can see the holes for the top of the plug and lead. While it looks "different", I feel it looks better then bumps. Perhaps as Tim mentions use the 37BY on the rear and only one hole for the front plugs. Just something to consider, of course there is a bit more heat with a C-85.

That is a different twist...and keeps it clean. I am going to talk with my metal man as he is doing the install of the new cowel that the Wenglarz made for me.

That's what I did on a friend's T to get home from Nevada. It works fine! I still have the top cowl here somewhere. The nicest ones I ever saw were just hammer and dolly'd into the top cowl. Very graceful and not much of a bump. Wish I'd had a way to get pictures!

I am thinking my metal man can do a simple bump . I am really striving for clean and and orginal to an extent look with as much of today's technology where safety comes to play. I am on to a firm game plan finally with use of an 0200.with Luscombe 8e exhaust just ordered.
and yes shielded ignition Getting rid of the trunk latche cowl which was installed after a 1961 nose over. It should never have had that cowling as an early 46 build. Clean look IS also a key...to a point of practicality. So not as orginal perhaps but hopefully a safer better performing ship.

I used the Luscombe exhaust with a slight modification to the cabin heat outlet. The tear drop bumps made somewhere back in the 60s.
I have been really happy with the Trig Ty91 as well.
