  • C85 Mags (Can I convert my A65 mags?)

I have found a good C85 to replace my tired A65 with. The engine however does not include mags with it. I have a set of Bendix S4-20 mags that I really like on the A65 with about 250 hours since rebuild. My understanding is that these are right hand mags on the A65. Is it possible to convert them to work on the C85 and does it economically make sense? Or am I better off going a different route for the mags? I am obviously trying to keep cost down as much as I can but want to be smart about it as well. I am planning to get a shielded ignition as well while I am installing the C85 if it matters.

I should mention its a C85-12 that I am considering to replace the A65.

Looking at the A-65 TCDS it shows S4RN-20-21 and the TCDS for the C-85 shows the same, so there may be a possibility of a right fit, turning direction, etc., wish you the best, gary

-8 right hand rotation, -12 left hand rotation

And if I remember right, it's mainly an internal timing difference, as well as both impulse couplings.

In summary, NO you can not, it will not work.

They turn the opposite direction, so the internal timing would be WAY off...

On the distributor gear, there's marks for cw or ccw rotation on a 20 series Bendix. It's not as far as you'd think.

Thank you for the info. Sounds like I may have to just suck it up and try to track down some new mags for the C85 then.

Certainly the Eisemann mags can be changed from one rotation to the other (I believe just a different impulse coupling and the breaker cam swaps ends). I think the rotor is the same.

On Eisemann you would also need to pull the impulse pin and reinstall it in the other hole in the face of the mag, which is very easy. I believe also to go from a dash 8 acc. case to a dash twelve you would need the deep dish gears, as the 12 case is spaced is further away than what the dash 8 case is.This is in addition to what Rob said in post 10 above.

Do you have data that allows you to change the configuration?

I would have to get the manuals out and look for it. I do remember a local IA has done it in the past, and he is gone west by now.
