  • L-2M - need new fuel cap

Does anyone know where I can get a fuel cap for less than $100?

For 100 bucks, I better gain at least 10 knots. How much thrust do those caps provide?

Why not just change the gasket?

They are just normal caps with a piece of tube soldered into a hole in the top for the fuel float wire. Some had two brass tabs soldered on to help turn it. Who in the world said they cost $100!!! Someone is trying to sell you a bridge in NY City! For that much it should be gold plated with a diamond on the top of the wire.

The "handles" are broken off, making it difficult to remove. I guess what I should really do is just weld new handle "tabs" on. They are this type:

They are actually brazed on, so even simpler to replace.

Don't discard if you can help it. The company that made them for over 70 years stopped manufacturing this particular cap. (Not the ears and tube, just the cap).

Perfect. Now I have a reason to buy a brazing torch, and teach my 6-year old daughter how to braze. A few weeks ago she helped me weld my mower deck.

Remember to stamp the tabs BEFORE you braze them to the cap and remove the gasket. Stamping the tabs after brazing REALLY bends up the cap and brazing with the seal in REALLY stinks! ;-)

It would also be a good time to replace the gasket.

Some of the gaskets are not autofuel compliant. Get the ones from Atlee Dodge just in case you ever run car gas.

Thanks for the tips on the gasket, I will replace them now as well.

Where do you get the die to stamp the tabs?

The stamps on mine looked just like what the local machinist had in a box in his office. I think they were standard metal stamps.
