I can't seem to find exact replacements for these pulleys. Anyone know where I can find them or a pulley with which I can legally replace them? Thanx, Larry

This pulled up off the forum via the "search" feature:

      Thanx Dick,
I may go that route, but would rather get originals if possible. Haven't found them anyplace ,so that is probably not an option. Larry

You won't find them new, not made anymore. The bearing pulleys are much nicer anyways, and helps control feel

Larry: I have some well used original pulleys that I could send you, but enen though I'm a stickler for making everything original I don't recommend that you use them. The ball bearing pulleys are much superior to the originals. At least, try replacing a few of the 3" pulleys in your aileron circuit...the difference is amazing.

            Hi Bob,
Thanx for the offer. Used pulleys would do us well at this time. Let me know cost and postage and I will have a cheque out to you. We appreciate your help.

I, too, just bought new pulleys from Doug Combs. But the groove (where the cable goes) is not cut as deep as in my existing bushed pulley. So now, I cannot get the new pulley in place unless I make the cable longer by turning the turnbuckle in the tail. My AI doesn't want to do this if he doesn't have to. Any suggestions?

It just shows you how worn the old ones were. Lengthen out the turnbuckles and re-safety. While you are doing the turnbuckles it would be a good time to check the bolts where the cable attaches to the elevator. Tom

I don't think that the old pulley groove is worn. I'm replacing them because of the nicks in the flange (see my earlier picture). But see the sketch below. The middle pulley is what the new pulleys look like. The one on the right is what my old one looks like. The imaginary one on the left is what I imagine the new one would look like if the groove were worn to the diameter of the old one. But the old one doesn't look like that at all. The groove is tapered, not straight-walled

It would wear like that if the pulley shaft was cocked to one side (not vertical with the cables coming straight back). Have you checked to see of the pulley is square to the cables?

I'm really surprised that others haven't had this problem. I just assumed that the pulleys that I had were original to the airplane. Now I'm doubting that.

I'm convinced that the deeper grooves are machined that way. It is not wear causing the depth. The cables go into and out of the pulley without fighting the pulley. In fact, look at the pictures attached. You can see paint on the insides of the groove from overspray from the last time the airplane was painted (decades ago). If the cables were touching the flanges, the paint wouldn't have stayed there long.

The diameter (at the bottom of the groove) in the old pulley is about 2.515"

The groove diameter of the new pulley is about 2.690"

I think you are right. That overspray would have stripped off the first few passes of the cable if it was touching. I wonder if someone turned the pulley on a lathe with a little round jewelers file or some sandpaper to clean it up sometime in the past. You can even put a pulley on a nut and bolt and use a drill press for that (NO, I am NOT recommending it, I have just seen it done!).

You haven't been scared till a small jewelers file zips past your head and sticks in the wall from some knucklehead using a drill press and saw or file for a lathe! I expected to get shot at in the military, but NOT with a file!
