That is why I made the point. same wheel, firestone just bought them out. what it boils down to is that even the tcds sheets are sometimes not correct since a HUMAN has to enter the information. Only when a manufacturer is diligent about keeping up with the information are they kept correct.

I was unaware of that, Mike. Thanks for the history lesson and you are right about the human factor.

Well, what we run on our BC-12D is either 4 ply or used 6 ply that have been removed from a heavier aircraft because the tread was worn down. I have never lain awake in bed at night considering the appropriateness of this "alteration". And to be honest I have never sawn a tire in half to see how many plies it actually had since most tires now days are sold with a particular ply "rating" and not necessarily the actual number of plies. Oh, and I am an A&P and IA. This has been a good and entertaining read though. Also, we have McCauley wheels.

I got ramp checked the other day when I flew into Peachtree/Falcon Field to go to Aircraft Spruce, he didn't bend over to look at the # of ply's, he didn't look at the compass to see if the correct fluid was in there, only wanted to see the aircraft registration and airworthiness, that's all, didn't even ask to see my pilots license, although I have been asked to show the pilots license in years past, Tom

I have been ramp checked twice in my life. Once by Illinois State Police in Palwaukee, IL. Other times I have "made myself scarce" when I saw people around that appeared they were there "to help". I have flown into Peachtree myself to go to Spruce but usually just drive there. Oh, and on the ramp checks, it was paperwork only, no inspection of the aircraft. I don't think they wanted manifests, just registration and airworthiness. Don't remember if they wanted my pilot's license or not. I think for the police they did want to see that. Of course that was back in the late 80's and I only can remember 4 days back.

Great thread. Another endorsement for Experimental aircraft. Anybody use a good rag and tube IA in Northern Nevada or Greater Reno/Tahoe area?

Oh yes, the old Illinois State Police ramp check terror. The sent troopers to airports to check aircraft and pilots, but the troopers didn't know didlly squat. They most likely wanted to see your Illinois airplane registration as well as your Illinois pilots registration even if you were not from Illinois. I know one fellow who told them his flight was for interstae commerce, and they didn't know what to do.

                          Tom,

This is the first time I ever heard of that, what precipitated it? Did the state need more money? I am surprised they aren't back to doing that given the 'state' we are in.
                          Cheers,
                          Marty

I don't know, but I do remember it from back in the mid- eighties. I think any violations were thrown out, and it only lasted for a couple weeks. Pilots and airports were outraged because they were trying to enforce FAA regulations as well. Tom

Sounds like something our last governor would do to increase revenue. Get fined or make a campaign contribution...
