Hubcaps

There is interest for hubcaps from the thread "What Type of Grills Are These"!

I will spin hubcaps for the group if no one else is fabricating them! I would need a drawing, sketch or actual hubcap to pattern a mandrel.

Could someone please post pictures of the hubcaps!

There are two styles I have had, unfortunately I have niether at this time. The most common style for the BC-12 has three flats on the face for mounting. The other is common to the L-2 with a single mounting hole in the center. Each has a rolled edge. I am not sure if you can, or would be willing, to make the typical three hole mount which is what most folks usually want. No one has successfully reproduced a hubcap for the BC-12 that I have seen in the six years I have been involved in T-Crafts. Hopefully someone chimes in here with one you can actually look at.

How close in NC are you to Virginia Beach? I have some caps I was going to use to make a buck to try and make some copies but you actually have the RIGHT tools to do it. There is a third type of cap out there for one of the other wheels but I can get you at least one type.

I am located twenty miles south of Greensboro, how do you want to send an example of the hubcap? Do you remember the town Benny Lawrence kept his Taylorcraft?

Is the outer edge of the hubcap rolled like a wired edge of a cowling and musical instrument (French Horn, trumpet)?

That's the type I have (rolled edge) and it does NOT fit my wheels. I have a wheel apart from my 45 and was hoping we could find the type of cap that fits it too. I need to get to the hangar and dig out the 45 wheels but the weather here has been terrible lately.
What I was hoping was you were close enough for us to get together. Wasn't Benny in Asheboro NC? Seems like he was about 250 miles and 5 hours from me by car. By Taylorcraft it was more like 180 miles and 3 hours (plus a lot nicer ride)
I wish my plane was flying, that would be a FUN little trip and I could bring down the wheel and a cap. Drop me an email with your mailing address (leave out the spaces below and use the numeral 2 after the name, oh crud, why am I explaining it, you can figure it out!) and I will mail you a wheel cover as a sample and get some dimensions from the wheels I have. THE only problem with the caps I have is the diameter is just a little too large to fit in the lip of the wheels I have. Spin them with the new diameter and they would work fine for me. I would make sure the caps I have DO fit the other wheels before I made any more of them though!

FYI- Charles is the guy that made those awesome wing tanks for my Clipwing Taylorcraft. He is an absolute craftsman. Can't say enough good things about him.

About that rolled edge with wire... I believe that technique is called "hemming". Do you have the tools and capabilities for this process? If so, I would like to see about having you make some cowling parts for another antique airplane.

There are 2 styles of hub caps the 3 hole type like you have in the picture, and the center hole type for the pre war. If you look closely at your wheel you will see 3 small holes on the ridges near the hub. These were for attachement of a 3 legged bracket for the center screw hub cap. Some place I have a pattern for the bracket. Tom
