Re: Pretzel Yoke Center Hubs part deux

    Here is our rendition.
I am going to play with these molds and see if I can get decent results. I'm not sure of my fiberglass skills but it is worth a try. Originals appear to be injection molded.

The graphite hub was done by a local company using this mold. They are not perfect, but they can be easily cleaned up and used.

Note the originals had threaded metal plugs to hold the screws. I would probably consider threaded epoxy plugs.

Mark, those are BEAUTIFUL! I want a pair for my 45, how much? Remember to NOT clean the flash off or fix the pin holes (if any) or cut the holes out. If someone wants to challenge our use of them we want to be able to do a substantive part of the work so we can call them "owner produced".
I think I will do a drawing and QA plan too, just to be safe (and anal, as usual).
Also looking forward to seeing the tube end fittings "NY86" (I wish I knew you by name instead of just as NY86) is looking at casting. I need a set of those too.
Who wants to stamp coins and who wants to do the silk screening? I have the negatives for the center logos made from an original.

Sorry John, I just can't seem to keep track and keep forgetting NY86 is you.

Yeah, that's the plan. they will be molded from modern day plastic for better longevity. Also, I'm planning some sort of interlock on the edge so they don't tend to distort in random fashion. Once the mold is made it doesn't care what color plastic you pour into it... I'm trying to get the most accurate color match possible.

Ragwing nut (I can never remember your name; Mike?) I've got a bunch of them here. Only one has the writing on the back. Anyhow, I'm going under the assumption the patent is not in force.

Hank: NY86 is my home. John's my name... I think the buttons may be anodized. That would explain why the back side is the same color...

I hate to throw another "what if" into the works...but both buttons I have seem to be brown. I've even had other people look at them and they all say they're brown too. (I've spent too many years in the paint booth to not get second opinions) Maybe it's just black faded???? It sure doesn't look like it...

Re: Pretzel Yoke Center Hubs part deux

Here's my two hub pieces against the rather maroon of the new-ish Univair Ercoupe pretzel yoke. You can also see the bare aluminium structural hub that I am living with at the moment.

Given the choice of colours so far, I think I prefer the richer maroon to the scarlet shown in Ron's photo.

Incidentally, if anyone would like to change their log-in handle, send me a Private Message (PM) and it'll be arranged. We're all friends here, and first names are acceptable, as long as everyone doesn't want "John"!

If EVERYBODY was John, I wouldn't have problems remembering everyones names. Of course that would lead to a bunch of new identification problems!

Really nice work! Thanks for making the effort to make these OWNER BUILT parts available. This is just what we need, lacking support from other sources.

If you want to know for sure, pop the button off and look at the back. I'm guessing it'll be black.

Re: Pretzel Yoke Center Hubs part trois

                            The ship has arrived!

We made a couple of improvements. The covers are thicker material than the originals and there is an interlocking edge to help prevent the distortion present in the originals. All new hardware is included.

We also made a kit which includes the plastic trim at the base of the center spoke and the hardware needed to replace it. Note that you will need to remove one of the taper pins holding the yoke to the shaft in order to replace this trim. The hub cover can be replaced without removing the taper pins.

Disclaimer: Please note that I have made a significant investment in tooling to make this happen, and I am in it to make some money. I am pricing them at what I think is a fair price for both parties. Contact me via e-mail or PM if you're interested. I can supply any of the three colors with the Taylorcraft (black) logo cap.

The picture is best viewed full size (click on the thumb nail, then click inside the picture then click inside the picture in it's own window). The Ercoupe cover is maroon, not black...

(They are so shiny I had trouble getting a good picture, but I think they came out great!)
