    Re: engine upgrade to 0-320

The 0-320 for sure is the best performer however, those that fly them with the smaller tanks complain of limited range because of the fuel burn .

    A friend of mine has a T with 0-290 and 1800 edo floats . He cruises 120mph
but like the others with the larger engine and small tanks he has limited range.

This plane is for sale if anyone is interested. It is in the experimental or
amateur built as it is called here in Canada.

I think it is Glen Alsworth in Alaska who has the STC for this change. I believe it involves a new motormount, nose bowl from a piper PA18 and
new cowling . I also think the battery will go in the tail to correct W&B .

      Re: engine upgrade to 0-320

Guys , read the TC #1A9 , it shows all the Models from 19 to F-22.
I was the test pilot on the F-19, F-21, F-21A, F21B,& the prototype F-22 , TW & nose wheel. The 0-235L2C was the 118 HP engine used on the 21, A & B. I did the noise tests to allow the 118 HP for the first few minutes. READ the TC. Do I think the 0-320 is the answer , heck YES, it just cost too much at that time in our history. It is a bullet proof engine, I flew an E2D on a Cherokee to over 3600 hrs. w/o overhaul. The 180 HP was used because Lyc gave them away at that time. Fuselage tubing is same , Gross weight was taken to 1750 and later to 2000 lbs. on the prototypes. I flew one test at 2200 for performance data. Had to use three shock cords but she flew.

        Re: engine upgrade to 0-320

There are a bunch of BC12's converted to O-320's in Alaska. There were around 3-4 in Port Alsworth. There is one if Fairbanks at Chena that is forsale. The bad thing about them is the lack of range and you dont always get a gross weight increase to corresponding power increase. Tim

            Re: engine upgrade to 0-320

A frind of mine had a bc12d converted to a 160hp what a plane. He solved the fuel problem by adding another 6 gallon fuel tank in each wing.
That was 20 years ago and feild aprovals up here was easy to get.
He kept it as light as he could no electrics no battery hand prop
it was just under 1000 lbs. I got to ride in it a few times 1500pm clime
As far as skes more power would be great I have the 90 in mine Ive takin
off in 4 ft of fluffy stuf but i pack a bout 50 ft with the snoe shoes never had a problem. Its not as bad as overflow thats where the 150 would be the ticket...
            These are more normal conditions

              I have an A65 BC12D that I am converting to a clipped wing 0-320.
are there any engine mounts available for that conversion, or will I have to weld them up myself?

                B. Alsworth in Anchorage builds them. He had the only legal STC for it back in the 70's. Some performer of an airplane, light and powerful.

Lake and Peninsula Borough Mayor Glen Alsworth has more than 30,000 flight hours logged in 25 countries on six continents. He founded Lake Clark Air in the headwinds of public opposition back in 1979.

article on the Alsworth clan in Alask...try lake clark air and see if you can get a phone number

I think the Swick STC allowed for a O-320, and there was a not on the drawings saying you could install any or all of the modifications. I know they included plans for the motor mount, but I think they added a 5th attach point to the fuselage.

Quite a few years ago there was a bc-12 fuselage on ebay that had a conical lycoming mount on it and I remember there being a fifth attach point going from the lower engine mounts down to the bottom center of the firewall. It made a big "V." I'm guessing that there was some additional tubing added behind the firewall.
