  • Re: A list of lift strut suppliers (updated 12 Dec 2007)

I have before me two brand new PMA Supplements just issued by the LA MIDO Office for our UA-A854 and UA-A815 Taylorcraft lift struts. They expand the model applicability. They are now approved for Taylorcraft models:

    A

    BC, BCS, BC-65, BCS-65, BC12-65 (ARMY L-2H), BCS12-65, BC12D-85, BC12D-4-85, BCS12-4-85

    BF (ARMY L-2G), BFS, BF-60, BF-60, BFS-65, BF12-65 (ARMY L-2K), BFS12-65

    BL, BLS, BL-65 (ARMY L-2F), BLS-65, BL12-65 (ARMY L-2J), BLS12-65

    19, F19, F21, F21A, F21B, F22, F22A, F22B, F22C

The day after I got word of the NPRM I submitted my comments to the FAA. Included in them was the request that our struts be accepted for terminating action of the AD on all of the above aircraft without the need of an AMOC. My guess is that will be the case when this revision is finally issued.

        OK, I have a BL12-65.
There were a LOT of pre-war BL12-65s that were converted to BC12-65s but show nothing in the logs that the Cont was put in for the Lyc. Where does that leave me? It's the exact same plane from the firewall aft from the factory and is now the same from the prop aft except the paperwork still shows BL not BC. BL12-65 isn't listed for application.

I just recieved a call from Tom @Wag Aero. They also are now approved as terminating action for the AD for all models affected by the AD-it ended up that the FAA has granted the terminating action without needing an AMOC. This afternoon or in the morning he will send me an e-mail with part numbers and additional information. Now we will have two very good sources for replacement struts for all the models in addition to Alaska Airframes!

I jut off the phone with a customer service rep at wag-aero, and she stated that as of last week, her supervisor had informed her that the struts were not yet approved, and would not likely be approved for another 6 months.

              Jon,
You might call Tom O'Neil @ 800-558-6868 ext 124 and he can verify or when I get all the information I will post it. Hope this helps.

Good news Bill on Wag-Aero. I called for Tom last week and he was unavailable,
But Judy a sell rep. said the same to me about could be 6 months.
I was going to try Tom again today and speak with him, but will not now, will wait for your information. Need to know cost and delivery times.
                  Thanks Bill for the update.

                    Buell, thanks for the info.

I called wag aero again and spoke to Tom O'Neill.

He made it clear that they had indeed gotten all of their paperwork in order, including the termination action. he also stated that they had manufactured a protoype set, and installed them on a customer's aircraft, and everything went smoothly.

He couldn't guarantee a date for availability, but suggested they are very close to production, possibly within several weeks.

Tom promised that he would forward the most accurate info to Buell, who will post in this forum.

                      Jon,
You are very welcome. One thing I would like to stress is that need to keep trying for an extension in our comments to the FAA on the revised AD. Our aircraft have been grounded for several weeks already and even with struts finally becoming avaliable it will be several more before we can install them. I believe that letting them sit for to long can create problems.

                        Robbie,
Tom still does not have all the information yet but I talked to him today and wanted to post what he told me that I could since I had posted that I would by now. The price isn't firm yet due to getting the exact cost-they are still expecting around 1800.00 per set judging by the struts they build for Cubs,Aeronicas, Etc. They will come with clamps and he is going to have them primed with the Off white epoxy primer that we asked for. He is estimating about 3 weeks until they are able to build and ship the first batch but asked that I make sure not to indicate that as a firm date. They will probaby build and ship 10 sets per run. He wanted me to tell you that your struts will be in the first ones and he will contact you or would like for you to contact him anytime.

Airframe Struts arrived today. I didn't have time to look at them but my son
is an A&P and IA did. He is very happy with the workmanship, primer, and the paperwork.
I'm a little unhappy with Fed Ex Ground lost 6 hours yesterday and they were going to make me wait again but finally agreed to deliver within my time frame which only cost me 4 hours today.

My total cost was $2,025.00 There was an 80 or 90 dollar
crating charge so the shipping must have been around 150.
Alaska to Visalia, CA.(Central Calif) My son feels that the primer is good enough to scuff and then paint.
