  • Faux Fairleads

These look a lot like BC-12D fairleads. Same outside diameter as original with slightly more wall thickness. Genuine phenolic.

Make then by chucking the phenolic tube on a dowel, spin it in a drill press while dragging a needle file on the tube. This process takes about 10 minutes per piece. If you don't have a big honking drill press then wrap masking tape around a reasonably large dowel until the dowel is built up enough to hold the tube. A little more tape holds the tube to the dowel on one end while you groove the other end.

Taylorcraft needs ten of these. I will provide 12 pieces of tube, cut to length but not grooved for 10 bucks and I'll pay shipping in the CONUS. You can screw up two of them learning to cut the grooves yourself -- really you don't want to pay 2 hours of A&P shop rates for someone to cut the grooves now do you?

This is my "get rich quick" product. If everyone in the tribe buys a set I can retire before I turn 96.

          Mark:

I could use a set of those fairleads, too. It's great to see folks making these hard-to-find parts. If we all produced a part or two we could manufacture that T-Craft kit ourselves!

Hey, here's an idea. If this fairlead gig doesn't fully fund your retirement...just don't retire. Refuse to leave. Tell the bastards you want to die at work. Make them deal with your dead, stinking carcass.

Just kidding, Mark. Don't do that. If the fairlead gig doesn't work out you can just retire into poverty. Like the rest of us.

            Bob,

            Thanks for the chuckle.
Send a private message with your address and I'll drop a set in the mail to you. Pay later if you like them.

I have two other cutomers so far so my profit is up to 39 cents

                Re: Faux Fairleads

Howdy: 12/24/2006 Just an update for the 10 fairleads found hanging on my hangar door handle at 1T8...it was a mighty nice looking Christmas wreath Mark! Anyway, I put a micrometer on the new leads...they were just a little larger than the originals and they would not safely be tapped into the rings. I took a one-handled hack saw blade and slightly deepened the grooves, and then lightly belt sanded the tubes until I could get an individual snug fit on the rings. If your leads come without grooves, I would suggest you dry fit them before grooving for the snap rings. They look original and are better than the stock tubes! Let's call them ersatz (replacement) leads rather than faux (fake) leads! Doc

                  Re: Faux Fairleads

Seems to me you were provided "Material" and manufactured the fairleads as an "Owner Manufactured Part". Right?

                      Re: Faux Fairleads

I got my 12 Julicher fairleads last week and put them on my "T" this morning. Beautiful! A bit more work than the nylon fairleads, but worth it. Original style and phenolic too.

I fabricated some primitive tooling (photos here, click on "Fairleads, Phenolic") to make finishing them a bit faster. If anyone would like to use my "tooling" to make their own fairleads drop me a note on the PM and I'll send it along.
