how do you keep wing straight while covering

  • #2
Never worried about it. Struts take care of it when you remount on the fuselage.

The covering is relatively forgiving, but the leading edges may oilcan once the covering is on and wing wash adjusted.

So good practice to block the sawhorses to the approximate wash while installing the leading edges and tensioning the fabric.

I never worried about it either. One might argue that the wings shouldn't be straight at all!

My wings had a "set" from all their years when I re-fabricked (sp) them. Excerpt from my blog of many moons ago:

"One of the things very noticeable is a "set" in the wing, after nearly 60 years of washout in each wing.
Here, the wing tip lays on a trestle... both wings like to settle with the wash-out set into the shape
        .
        "

And a photo to accompany the above text:

The small amount of washout adjustment upon fitting to the fuselage will have no detrimental effect upon the wing fabric.

wings should have the required twist in them when you cover them. Otherwise you can have diagonal wrinkles when you twist the wing. When you stitch the wing you create a box you have to twist. Much easier to cover it with the twist already in it.

            Agreed, but not absolutely necessary

Its not absolutely necessary, but you would be surprised how much of a difference it makes. Same thing with leading edge skins. Its the little steps that make the end result a nicer product.
