  • Interior Door handles

Working on doors today. Anyone know what auto these came from?. This is for a March 1946 build. The last owner (I am really starting to get peeved) liberated the inside collar piece that serves as a filler between the handle and the sheet metal of the door. It is apparent to me he had a "buddy" that he gave some parts to before I picked it up. Not much but it does not take much.. Does anyone have one they care to sell,. I do not mind replating these (actually if I can find the auto is they came from my bet is a reproduction is a LOT less expensive than that) Chevs of the 40s interior door handle is different Click image for larger version

Well that is encouraging to know. Now I just need to find someone that knows where I can get the back spacer. I bet these came from some 1946 auto!

Are you sure they are the same? These are not magnesium (at least I do not think they are) the later 46s inside door handles are different and yes I believe magnesium. I am truly finding out the early 46 build were very unique. My inside door handles as well as the escusion behind it is chromed steel I believe. Definitely chromed and Definitely not like the later 46s. I also found for sure the doors from that use a steel door frame (frame attached to the fuselage will not fit this earlier larger door style with the wood frame as attached to the fuselage. Soo it is fix the orginals.

Someone, anyone please study my pics and see if you have any interior door handles (the piece that goes between it and the door are most needed!!!)

Mine is 43328. It has exterior handles like the 41 deluxe, and a slider in the inside instead of a rotating handle. Not sure that it is original though.

It would make sense that all along they would use the same handles as the outside on any given year given costs what they are.

You might try to google vintage car and truck window handles and accessories and find what you want also.

Chances are you can find a suitable escutcheon at Chevys of the 40s.

Haven't been to the site in a while but I got my trim handle and escutcheon from them and they were very helpful with dimensions etc.

I assumed all the aluminium full door BC12Ds had the magnesium handle inside. If yours has the mag handles on the outside, I wouldn't be surprised if it originally had mag handles inside too. Taylorcraft was trying to reduce the number of different parts at the time.

The mag handles are relatively easy to mess up, and good ones not that easy to find. Stand to be corrected but I suspect yours is not the only example of a field retrofit.

Mine is 43640 (built March 1946) with magnesium door handles inside & out; ali doors on wood door frame.

After the war, casting magnesium had developed somewhat, and was a simple, common, cheap and easy process.

Examination of the shaft the handles mount on reveals that yes indeed they were drilled slightly to hold the set screws of these automotive handles. The old set screws for the old handles are still there further back on the shift and are free and workable...now to find some magnesium door handles . I have extra doors that all have them ..inside and out problem is the set screws will need to be drilled out they are all frozen stripped heads... yes Scott one can see why they are hard to come by!

I probably have misunderstood, but just in case...

the handles are held in place by steel roll pins 1/8" diameter. They can be tricky to remove, the magnezium being easily damaged in the process.

A modified snap in a good rivet gun works best.

                              Scott,

The mounting door shaft definitely has set screws where the pins would be.
