  • bungee tool

    Hello Folks,
I'm restoring a 1940 BC 65. Does anyone have a landing gear bungee tool I can rent or borrow? I've never installed the bungees so some helpful hints would be appreciated. I live in Maryland.
    Thanks,
    John Loftus

I am about 100 miles due south of you at KSFQ and have one. Have you ever done bungees before? It is a lousy drive but not a bad flight. Are they close to needing replacement or are you grounded?

      Hi Hank,
Thanks for the quick response. I haven't done bungees before. The A&P I'm working with has a PA-12 and I'm sure he'll help. I think the bungee arrangements are similar.
Are you offering to fly up here? That's above and beyond the call! I'll happily pay the postage to send the tool.
I should be ready to install the bungees within two weeks.
      Take care,
      John

I was going to say I was in annual right now so flying up would be delayed a bit. I doubt I will be ready in two weeks. First time I read your response I read two years! THAT would certainly not be a problem! Is your T the only plane available? It looks like a fun short cross country. Mailing is possible, but flying is more fun! Especially when we are so close.

Hank, his airplane is in restoration, and not flyable.

I have the tool. If I can plan a trip up it would be fun to do a bungee change (I am a masochist). If he is ready too soon I should be able to mail unless someone is closer.

I think it would much better to ship the tool instead of hauling the airplane to you on a trailer to install the bungees.

I was thinking more like flying up with the tool. ;-)

If Hank is not able to take care of you, I have a loaner that you just pay shipping each way. Tim

                    Hank,
Unfortunately I don't have access to another airplane. I think the best course is to mail the tool. I'll reimburse the postage of course. Does that sound like a plan?
When I get my airplane flying I'd like to come to your place for a visit.

                    Tim,
Thank you very much for your offer.
                    John

Let me know when you need it and I will ship it (might want to use a PM to send your address unless you really like getting all kinds of strange mail!). If it looks like I can break free and the weather is good I might be able to deliver. Like I said, looks like a nice 1 hour XC for the Taylorcraft. If something falls apart Tim is also a good option.

Usps flat rate box, packed in foam, pack it good or it will blow out the box. Tim

Every Taylorcraft owner/operator should have one.
Or every EAA Chapter? Have you checked yours, John?

[edit: I don't mean to be rude or to teach Granny; just checking, that's all!]

Got to admit it has almost blown out of my hands a couple of times. Nice well made HEAVY tool!

If we can ever get the regional clubs going again we should AT LEAST have one in each region as well as some scales to weigh planes. I remember some really good times when we would get together for routine maintenance when Virginia Carolina's Taylorcraft Owners was active. Actually kind of fun to have three o four planes lined up doing oil changes together before going in for a good BBQ!

                              Hank

ANY excuse to get together! Owner assist annuals were a BLAST!!
