  • Cooling Issues Anyone?

    Hi All
While at OSH I was involved in an interesting conversation about the Taylorcraft closed cowling and "Chin Scoop" which prompted me to walk around the field looking at other aircraft (to the extent one can see with cowlings closed).

I've been laid up for a couple of days (sick days from my retirement) so I thought I'd use the time to put together an expanded post on cooling success based on what I've learned over the years, during my restoration and since.

It also includes more details on how I fabricated the lower crankcase baffle which is a part that is hard if not impossible to find.

Let me know what I've missed and perhaps it can then be posted in the technical docs section for future reference.

You can find the post here https://c-fclr.blogspot.com/p/taylor...d-cowling.html

    Cheers
    S

All the Taylorcraft I have seen (at least the post-war ones) with A-65s have this scoop under the belly of the engine. It makes sense.

But I look at other aircraft from the same era (and with the same engine) but they don't have this "chin scoop" or "belly scoop".

I wonder if it something that CG Taylor had an issue about? He designed a press-former to mould it from a single piece of aluminium.

Has anyone seen it on another aircraft type with the same engine?

Rob, the cessna 150 used a lower baffle under the engine case, also the 140 had one along with a baffle that molded the kidney tank on the sea plane version. The baffles are listed in the parts manuals for both aircraft.

Oh I also have cooling problems, I went from the original taylorcraft baffle to one more like a modified C-150 on the rear and taylorcraft on the front, I am in the process closing up the open spots, and will hopefully get it cooling correctly again. I had lots of open areas behind the rear baffle...

I'm not familiar with the franklin or lycomimg installations but is is possible the nose bowl was designed to accommodate all the various engine options of the day and therefore needed the scoop?

Ercoupe took it one step further and added a shroud to each side of the tank. Never had an issue with cooling on the "B", but we did have some on our L-2M even with the baffle, and added a continental cooler to the pad on the 85.

I have one of those Continental oil coolers, if any one is looking, it was on the C-90 when I got it, there's an El Reno oil filter pad on there now,
