  • Wing compatibility, best.

I'm thinking of building another set of wings for an experimental. Does anyone know if the wings off a 1946 BC-12D have the same spar spacing/width dimensions as the 1940 BC-65? Do they use the same hardware/bolt sizes? Does the 46 BC12D have aluminum ribs? Has anyone heard of building a set of Taylorcraft wings with flaps? Maybe some supercub guys out there?

They have the same spar spacing. Some of the clip wings are modified in the wing root attach area, so the stock Taylorcraft wing may not just bolt up. There are some wings with flaps out there, but I don't know how helpful they are. There might have been a set of Taylorcraft wings with flaps on Barnstormers not long ago.

yes same dimensions. yes aluminum ribs, stick prewar, stamped postwar. yes same hardware. f-22 wings had flaps. prewar had thinner trailing edges, and steel aileron fittings. postwar had magnesium. theres a handful of other differences, but insignificant for what your planning.

Here's a pic of Taylorcraft flap hinges from a thread here. Note the modification to the aileron style hinge to lower the flap-hinge attach point and allow for some down and back deflection vs more of a rotation for the ailerons. The flap cove is tapered up like Post War Taylorcraft ailerons and Pipers. If you want effective flaps then consider these Mackey/Airframes setup: http://www.performancestol.com

Look at a D&E wing kit, were about 12K for everything

We've got a guy out here selling a complete 46 BC12D for $5k, hasn't been flown since 2000, but covered, high time engine, Ceconite in 1976.

Not to nitpick, but the performance stol flaps are Doug Keller's design that he sold the production rights to. The Mackey/Backcountry flap that is being developed for the Rev3 are more like a plain flap but it has ducts on the leading edge of the flap that keep the air attached to the flap at more extreme deflection. I've got a house here in Douglas that I'm living in while at work, and I've stopped by the Backcountry shop to see the operation. I didn't want to ask to take pictures because it's brand new, but if you search hard on the web I think there's some photos of the new flap out there. Supposedly less deployment forces than the Keller, but just as effective.

Thanks Dave for the correction. I confused the two inventors. Thankfully their products will be available to those that have the need and a fair comparison is in order. The currently available Keller/Airframes venetian blind set up is impressive, A local friend has them on his Cub and would never remove them. A Taylorcraft with effective flaps would be a fun tool for backcountry flying.

Sounds like a good project for someone. $5K is a good price for a complete aircraft, even if it needs cover + engine.

When looking around I got a kick out of this ad. Can anyone verify the statistics? I guess wing strut failure is not the same as wing failure?

How would you like to own your own Texas T-Cart Original Wings from an Unmodified Original Airplane, BC 12-D? These wings have been reworked but are in need of recovering.

Taylorcraft is the longest running production aircraft in the world, also the safest aircraft ever built, with no wing failures, in over 13,000 airplanes that have been built.
