Is this the instrument panel in your plane? If so, the header tank isn't really a header, it is the main 12 gallon tank between the firewall and the panel. There isn't much room between the panel and the back of the tank so if you want to add anything to the panel it needs to be outboard of the tank. where the glove boxes are. Getting the tank out is a royal pain. The easiest way, especially if you want to add any avionics is probably to pull the windshield, engine and boot cowl. Sounds like a MAJOR job (and it is) but once everything is opened up you get a unique chance to really go through the foot wells where you will find all kinds of things that have probably been neglected for a very long time. It also allows for easy removal of the tank and a wide open area for you to put in your new avionics.

If you want to put in an intercom and transponder how about mounting them on the floor just in front of the kick panel? That is where my intercom and battery are and they are easy to get to and are actually out of the way there.

I have pulled main tanks several times on different planes and you can actually take the whole thing apart in a weekend. Putting it all back together takes a bit longer. ;-)

          hello hank..

I currently have no functioning radio intercom and trans in the left glove box,

I was able to pull panel loose and drape onto floor boards and get the fuel tank out in about 45 min. i cut a zillion zip ties.

look to have the tank welded here in a day or two

the kick panel for my seats im leaving clear as it is removable for under seat storage. easy to get to for tie downs med kit tools etc

i was just curious to see if folks had moved or combined instruments any in their planes.

Eric, what is the tank made from? Aluminum or Ternplate?

Saw this on the Sonex Builders Forum. Don't know anything about it, haven't tried, no association with it.

well the tank is in hand here.. it is not magnetic and the seams look like an aluminum wet rather than a braze.

I use a handheld mounted on the "A" pillar and really like having the intercom between the passenger and pilots legs. Keeps the wires out of the way of the controls. Most later Taylorcrafts have the battery on the fuselage bottom tubes behind the seats (unlike the early planes that had it on the floor boards).

How about posting some photos of your storage compartments under the seats? Sounds like a great idea!

Re: panel ideas and tips please

Here are a couple of ideas. My collection of panel pics from a variety of sources. Two blog links below. Plus link to the TQ’s line at OSK this year and Trig.

Also a Trig panel cutout sheet. Nice thing about the new radios is that they have built in intercoms. TQ has a couple different orientation form factors which might help layout.

                      Hope it helps, Mark

Make sure you tell the radiator shop that can do the repair that the tank is from an antique tractor. Tim

Hank, I was going to leave the A pillor fairings off, but probably will put them on and mount my hand-held like the pic. What is the pic on left........Part of kick panel intercom mount?
