As you can see the light is level with the tip bow but angles OUT much more than other lights. Also note the bail that holds the glass dome on (most of the time). Some glass domes do NOT have the two small tits that hold the bail and they pop off much easier. The glass is getting much harder to find and they break very easily.

WOW . Nice pictures Hank. I found one outside door handle when rummaging through some old hardware I had from past projects! I need to see what else is with the project. Also the oil temp and Pressure gauges... were they simply round and just had the rectangle cover ?

Also I know nothing about Chrome plating..... so my dumb question is how do you simply plate just the spokes?

The oil gauges are just normal US Gauge small instruments. They are mounted behind the panel cover so you see them through the holes. The oil pressure ones are common, but the oil Temp is a bulb type and the sensor tubes tend to break and release the gas. Those are hard to find and a real pain to mount.

PS. I have received the original 41 panel and will be checking my buck with it soon. I will post some detail photos when I do. I have already found some things to improve on mine for the copies and will share. Kind of exciting! I might even consider making another one!

No dumb questions about plating! It is more art than science and even most engineers don't really understand the actual process. When I wrote plating instructions I spent a LOT of time in the shop with the actual artisans getting their input. The acidic atmosphere in there was really bad. It was NOT a place I would have wanted to ever work! It was common for their wrist watches to simply corrode to pieces and few wore ANY metal jewelry. Even the rivets on blue jeans corroded away! We couldn't even keep the Volt and Amp meters working in there. As a bit of side information, when the NADEP closed we were told ours was the CLEANEST and LEAST polluted site they had ever shut down! If ours was the BEST in DoD, I would be terrified to go in one of the average ones.

Let me know if you find extra outside handles. This is what I have on the outside on one side. Works great and looks good, but not correct. I really need to figure out how to make replicas. Just haven't done so yet because the handles I have do work, and the correct ones aren't needed to fly.

At least I CAN lock the door! I figured out how to make the door lock work with the original latch (grew up next door to a lock smith).

Speaking of gages - how many know that Taylorcraft once made these in white face? At least they did the pressure gages but to my knowledge never installed them. (Could it have something to do with whitefaced instruments being widely used if not standard in the J-3?)

Edit: Just checked (via Paul Matt's Hist. Av. Album Vol. XVIII p. 76) and the few instruments including both gages in the original E-2 Cub were *not* white faced, if Chet Peek was true to original. (It after all is his E-2... -via a 1963 photo.)

I always liked the white face instruments but could never find even a photo of one in a Taylorcraft. LOTS in Cubs, but not even the Taylor Cub. Who has photos of instruments with the Taylorcraft logo? Anyone know which planes those were used on?

                Hank,

Thank you for all the information. I suppose a newer style Oil tem gauge would "work" ? Also I really like your outside door handles. Locking too! What a novel idea!! Where could I get a couple like those. I Have the complete 41 Panel. Rough but possible to rebuild. The Center I was thinking while not original using real wood shaped on the edges like it was the metal one over-lay with the artificial wood they used. Would like to really dress her up BUT weight is the primary concern!

They was used in the Deluxe. Mine had a few when I got it. Don't think they was used in anything else and not in all of them.

I've got a couple on the PA12 I'm working on now.

I did it with my Deluxe, but I also didn't have a permanent airwothiness either, so I made the changes and notated them, then let the DAR come in and sign it all off. I installed extended baggage but left the hat shelf, and installed an O-200 in place of the 85.

Mike, do you have a copy of that 337? Or the N number so I can order the CD? Tim

                          Jim,
The funny thing is a rear hatch lever for a 1971 Triumph GT-6Mk III is what I used for the locking handle. They look really nice and are still available. They just aren't the "right" handle. ;-) I spent years rebuilding old Triumph sports cars (especially the GT-6) and still have a 71 in the garage. I had the handles and it didn't take much to modify them, so why not? When I got her she had two T handle Garage door handles that weighed a TON!
If you already have the 41 panel with the insert, trust me you can't get much lighter than the original Faux painted insert. I had never done Faux wood grain when I did my insert and glove box doors. I just went to the Home Depot Aviation Supply store and told them I needed to Faux paint a piece of metal. I also found a really nice piece of wood with grain I liked and copied the pattern. It really wasn't hard and I even copied the end grain for the edges. When they were new I had several people tell me I was supposed to Faux paint them, not use real wood. I had to show them it WAS faux painted. It was very convincing.
The other thing that is nice about the 41 insert panel is you COULD use a different Oil Temp since only a small window shows. No one would know if you used a different mis-matched gauge from the US Gauge. Just make sure the right part of the new gauge is showing through the window.

                            Hank,
Again Very helpful! I will use these. As a side not BEFORE I had my drivers license at 16 I owned three cars at different times starting around age 13. First was a 64 Impalla then came the 67 Spitfire before getting the 65 Mustang..dayjavu! The GT6MkIII was always an interesting vehicle to me ....

I have had and restored two GT-6s. One (my first car) a GT-6 MK 2 (GT-6+ in the US) and the one in the garage that is a GT-6 Mk III. Great looking cars, but not all that reliable.
