      Mike, yes the FAA letter clarifies that aircraft certificated without engine driven electrical that have subsequently been upgraded with (batteries or electrical starter) to engine driven electrical system do not have to equip per the ADSB regs.

        Class D airspace has the same rules whether it is under the shelf of a class B or in the middle of class G and E airspace. All that is required is 2 way radio communication.

          I'll get some pictures Saturday of my mounts/locations. It took a few iterations but have a system that isn't in the way and doesn't obstruct views.

          One of the reasons for picking Stratus over Garmin was 2X battery life. Stratus is 8 hrs and more if you use the low power Wifi setting.

          The Ipad-mini is the short life one as I don't let it sleep. But will still get 3+ hours at normal screen brightness. If you manage brightness it will go longer. I also have a slim battery brick that can run two devices if necessary.

          The Sportys SP400 handheld will get 20+ hours of AA battery pack life, similar for Sigtronics intercom 9V.

          The other nice thing in the Stratus/Foreflight AHRS/terrain view for the midwest is the wind turbine & towers database. There are a fair number of guyed towers that are 1000-2000' AGL.

                  Marty to your question on how I mounted all the gadgets. Took some pictures this weekend, awesome flying weather on Sunday for February in KC. Hope a lot of you got to fly too. Pics are in the attachment.

                  Dad came up with the center console, it works quite well. The intercom and headset controls are still a clump of wires between us but otherwise everything works well.

                  The extra battery I use is a dual device output Mophie battery (get at Best Buy or Amazon). It can just lay on the dash if needed. IPad time is the only concern and then that is for more than one fuel stop kind of trip.

                  The only modification I had to do with parts was to grind material away on the RAM mount arm to allow it to pivot further which got the IPad down low on the panel where I wanted it.

                  Hope it helps with ideas.

                    I need to take a photo of the tablet mount in my 41. Almost exactly the same location and no interference at all with vision. I did put the radio on the "A" Pillar since my big legs couldn't do without the space between the seats. You and yours must have slim legs!

                      Hi Mark,

                      Thanks for the great photos and explanations. My problem is I installed the cardboard hat shelf material that is correct for the dash. And before Hank says anything, mine got quite wet when I had to clean up once after Tina got a little sick with absolutely no ill effects.

                      I am not sure about having that iPad right in my face, but it does explain how one can be mounted out of the way. Though Tina and I are not big at all, that center console would not work, and, I don't need it as I have the portable on the left next to the pillar slightly above the glove box. The antenna cable goes up over the pillar cover and down underneath the floor to the antenna. It is really simple and the radio mount can be removed with no holes showing. I'll take pictures of that if someone else is interested in mounting a portable there.

                      I'll look into the Mophie battery, never heard of that. May be similar to my backup battery for my gps. I would like to use a small solar panel/battery for a backup when I think about researching one. Again thanks Mark!!!

                        Marty, yes I was worried about the view. I made a paper cut out of the Ipad and Ipad mini and placed it all over trying to find a good spot. Try the cutout it is helpful.

                        The picture from my cell phone makes it look bigger and more obtrusive than it is. The camera phone is wide angle so it distorts things that are only a few feet away. I tried to get the camera view to match my eye view showing the tiny corner where it is just above the cowl.

                        It is nice in this spot as you stay heads up, it's out of the way and there is nothing on the panel you are covering up.

                        The Ipad-mini is actually really easy to ignore and not look at on approach, etc. A full Ipad would be way, way too big.

                        I looked at attaching it "in" the glove box so it would sit in front of the glove box door, thus lower/left than the center wheel spot. But I fly left handed on the wheel so to do screen touch tasks I would always be switching hands.

                        The glove box location also has the screen obscured partially by the wheel frame.
