Re: Mag switch
Sorry Rob I would only part with it if for some reason I had elec start and then I might just put in a hidden button for that. Hank I'll get some good rubbing paper and see what turns out.
I am going to need to find someone experienced in rebuilding them to redo this one, the indents are really good-no slop in the different positions and feels good on resistance to moving to the different positions so prob will just need the refacing.

Re: Mag switch
I would really like a rubbing of the markings. Wonder if I stamped a new mount plate if I could get the lettering engraved in. Looks like a photo I saw of one in a 41 Deluxe.

Re: Mag switch
My mag switch is sure different from the ones pictured, it has off, mag1, mag2 and both. it has a black handle. Sorry couldn't post a picture but it's the wording that gets me with the word mag1 and mag2 on the cover plate.

Re: Mag switch
Well if anyone has old A-* switches that they are not sure about reconditioning for Certified Taylorcraft in the USA, than I'd be happy to receive them for all our non-Certified Taylorcraft in the UK. Plus the non-Certified Cubs, Aeroncas, Porterfields, etc that are here.
Happy to pay a reasonable sum.

Re: Mag switch
Thanks Tim I've looked around but the only source so far is the Cub Club article cited by many. I have a switch from my former PA-18A that was removed and replaced with two Piper switches (http://www.univair.com/piper/piper-p...nition-switch/). Not sure what happened but it'd go intermittent on one mag when the plane was on rough ground or water. Didn't like the switch's operation and fixed the problem with other parts. My mechanic says keep it in a safe place like a box unless there's good documentation to repair.Originally posted by astjp2 View PostAhhh but those are Mil-spec switches so the data was out there at some time.

Re: Mag switch
Yes the training is available, but is the manufacturers's repair data and not some anecdotal article in a publication or Forum out there for the old A-* switches? TCM and ACS do provide support for their products. I assume proper logbook entries are being made to reflect repairs.Originally posted by astjp2 View Postvery wise and Very legal with the appropriate training and data....Tim

very wise and Very legal with the appropriate training and data....TimOriginally posted by PA1195 View PostI wonder how wise (or legal) it is to repair something as old or critical as a magneto switch? Goes to ground when not expected = loss of some or all power. Goes open = hot mag(s). I'd not choose the risk and just replace the part, especially if there's ever a chance for a new owner to assume it's been airworthy during its life.

Re: Mag switch
The handle came off on my A7 switch a few weeks ago. In the first picture below, you can see wear on the lip that keeps it in place.
A bit of judicious bending made a new lip, and after a lick of paint (and a service of the electrical connections at the back), it's as good as new.
Interestingly, it feels very "positive" now in the detents, so the wear had been creeping up on me unaware.
So something to watch for.

Re: Mag switch
There are approved kits for the Bendix and ACS-type, don't know about the old style discussed here. Repairs are possible for most anything.
