  • Type of rivet used in Dzus fasteners in cowl

    Hi folks,
I am installing a new nose and bottom cowl.
Looking at the Dzus fasteners on the old parts I see they are attached to backing plates with what look like hollow, flush rivets.
Can anyone tell me what kind of rivets these are?
    Thanks!
    Jay

They are almost unavailable. just use some countersunk AD rivets. Tim

Sometimes called a semi-tubular rivet. Try here, http://rivetsonline.com/rivets-en/se...ar-rivets.html, might have what you need.

Ed, most mechanics don't have the tooling to install them either...Tim

Very true, not a common tool in the box anymore.

They're the "pesky little horrible" steel rivets used back then (and still used today in for example dished fabric cover plates). As Tim suggests, use something else.

Boot cowl rivets: I used cherries:

For cowl reinforcing plates I used standard aluminium AD rivets (as Tim suggests):

            Cover plates I generally re-rivet:

            I hate those steel rivets!

I think they are something like an an456 rivet or something like that. Normally its a large machine that puts them in. It punches them through the material and then swages them. Tim

They're a tubular rivet...Standard Rivet co. carries them. Any saddle shop or leather repair shop will have the tooling. If not, the last 2 riveters I bought were a whopping $5 each.

I wonder if a brake rivet tool would work??

There is on t'interweb a series of videos from 1943 about Cub construction.

The video above has, at time 10:30 and 11:30, details of rib construction, which uses a similar rivet.

(small delay while I watch it again!) There are obvious similarities between the Cub and the Taylorcraft; it's worth watching all or it. Anyone notice how the rib lacing reinforcing tape is applied AFTER stitching?

                      so cool Rob!

                      I really liked the video.

Installing reinforcing tape after stitching probably shortens the manufacturing process since there is no dope application or drying and no need to eyeball the tape into place over the rib.

Did you notice the front hinged doors on a Cub?

                      Thanks for posting it, Dave.

There are a brake/clutch rivet. Available in multiple lengths. You can buy small brake rivet tools I think from A/C spruce.
