  • Need advice on installing new rt. Wing tank in 1940 t-craft

we have not cut open wing, but looking thru bottom inspection holes
we can see the 2 wires plus 2 extra channel braces that run the opposite
direction to the wires, almost perpendicular to them. the channel is approx. 3/8'' wide and runs from wing root end to first rib. the 2 channels are approx. 3'' apart, top to bottom. they will have to be removed to install tank. has anybody encountered this problem before?
thanks for advice on this. larry

    Hello Larry,

Maybe this "how to" webpage might help:

This was on a 1940 BC12 Taylorcraft, so I'm sure the principles will be the same.

the basic principles would be the same, except mine is a first time tank installation
and 2 metal channels cross the area where the tank will sit.
I would have to cut them away so tank will fit.
just seems wrong. my wing is 13 rib. gross weight is 1150.

Larry, I hope you hurry and get figured out so we know how to do mine.

I just peel back the fabric and start there. My airplane had all sorts of weird brackets, I had to make the tank fit and remove all of the extra stuff that was not needed or part of the original installation. Tim

Also make sure what model you have BC, BF, or BL. All three were built under different type certificates. Only the BC has a note on the type certificate about installing the wing tank. If you have a BF or BL I think you need additional paperwork for the installation.

PS: the BC, BF, and BL go back to when the airplane was built, and not what is on the registration certificate now.

You will have an issue, because of the braces for the stick style butt rib. You will need to change the butt rib out to fix that problem properly.

The 41 B*12-65's had a wing tank with stick type ribs.

we cut fabric away today. turned into an easy job, once we could see everything.
this is my first time helping install a wing tank.
I wanted to make sure everything was done right.
                  all the ribs are metal.
thanks for all your advice, it was very helpful.

I guess it did, kinda forgot about that. I changed mine to stamped butt ribs when I rebuilt my wings for a stronger and straighter edge. Still a SOB to install wingtank in after it is covered.
