According to the Continental Engine service manual for A65, A75 and A80 the -9 model has a mount in the case for a starter with it are a different mag gear (only one) starter gear and different oil screen set up. Has any one any experience with this and would a new small style starter fit in cowl for a Standard Taylorcraft? Are the parts hard to find ?

Re: A65-9
If memory serves me right the 1955 Mooney Mite (M18C-55) came with a starter . If there is a Mooney Mite forum they may be able to help you with your inquiry about that engine. Why do I know something like this? I used to own a Mite. For those who know me, can you believe that I was able to fit in one of those little things once? It was a great little fun airplane to play pretend fighter pilot in.Bob Picard

Re: A65-9
The -9 engines wern't used in many aircraft. The big downfall is the HUGE starter used. It's the AN style and weighs a ton. No light-weight starters are made to fit this application. All of the gears in back are specific to the -9. I would take Mike's advise and look for an A65-12. They are pretty tough to find also, but when found alot less headache.

Re: A65-9
The -9 engine would probably fit on a long mount they are hard to find then you have to change the top and bottom cowls to answer your question a b&c starter will fit on a short mount using a dash 12 engine they come in the 75/85/90 horse power range the dash 9 was continentals bastard step child if you need a starter go with a dash 12 engine.1940 BLT/BC65 N26658 SER#2000

Re: A65-9
The A65-12 uses the same crankcase and rear case as the C series. The difference is in the diameter of the bore registers. The A series uses a smaller bore so the skirt portion is smaller, the crankcase is machined to this smaller diameter.
Continental considers only the engine series and not the dash number. In the front of the Service Manual they devote a paragraph to this. The dash numbers just indicates the modification level of the engine. The -8 has no provision for starter/generator and the -12 with starter/generator INSTALLED. Remove the starter/generator and install factory cover plates and you have a -12 with PROVISION for starter/generator, but not installed. So, if you need the starter/generator you have one option the -12. If you don't need these items you have 2 choices.
Regulatory issue would be, if the A65 is required it has to be an A65 regardless of dash number. If you install a C series engine it would require some kind of supplemental approval.

Re: A65-9
Number one there is no such engine the A65-12 does not exist period. No A series engine other then the dash 9 had the option to put on a starter. Now the dash 8 engines of the C series also did not have a place for a starter either. The dash 12 and dash14 and 0200 had a pad for the starter, also there was no engine in the C series that was rated at 65 horse power.Drude i used a push button you have to drop the engine off the top mounts to get the starter off now the only one that will fit is a B&C so if that is what wicks is selling that is a good price my starter cost me $795.001940 BLT/BC65 N26658 SER#2000
