  • Exhaust

If I remember correctly the exhaust on an A65 exits the cowling on the co-pilots side of a taylorcraft. If you see a 46 Taylorcraft BC12-D A65 with what looks like the exhaust coming out of the pilots side what does that mean? Some type of aftermarket homemade flamboozal stuff?

Just one, on that side? Mine has DUALS, like a Camaro V8. Chuckle.

      Re: Exhaust

There are dual exhaust options through STCs. The sound is great. You should hear Chuck's. He has a Luscombe exhaust on his I think. Makes working on the back of the engine WAY EASIER. The original Taylorcraft exhaust is really not a very good design.

I love mine. Lots more room in the back. Saves time dealing with all those screws for an annual. I always had a couple on the old one that where hard to get to.

Well sounds like a nice add on. All kinds of room for activities. I was looking at pictures of one on Barnstormers thats for sale and noticed it had exhaust on the pilot side. Cant quite tell if its on both sides.

            Re: Exhaust

I'm in the middle of my annual right now. After going through the painful removal of my heat muff I was blessed with a hole in my exhaust. After experiencing what everybody else had talked about, I called Terry for the paperwork and then Doug at the Luscombe foundation. I bought everything through the foundation and even had Doug mount the baffles and muffs for me. It seemed like a lot money, but since my exhaust and muff where toast anyway, it really wasn't much difference to upgrade.

              No! No...NO..No.no.nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

The 4-into-1 Taylorcraft exhaust is a lovely sound; how could you roughneck ne'er do wells ruin it by sticking dual stacks on? It'll sound like one of those American tractor trucks.

My stainless 4-1 has lasted 2500 hours now, and not a whisper of a crack.

I have duals on my Tcraft, reminds me of my old 409 days. (Maybe nobody remembers those engines/cars.)

                  Re: Exhaust

No four cylinder is going to sound like a 409.

Chris, if it was back in the old days I would say they reversed the negative. Lol.

Rob, I agree with you. I like my 4-into-1 and the way it sounds.
                  Cheers,

                    Re: Exhaust

The original Gilberti STC has you fabricate a 4 into 1 exhaust that exits the on the pilot side.

Many Taylorcrafts have been converted to Luscombe exhausts as they are simple and work well, unlike the taylorcraft exhaust which is prone to leaks and a pain in the a$$.

                          Re: Exhaust

The luscombe exhaust not only sounds different and good it also makes more heat for the cabin and carb. The easy access to the accessory case. At annual time the inspection of them is a snap and if your cowl is for a lycoming 65 it has the holes all ready in it and the pipes exit in the existing holes.

Not sure if that link will work or not but if you look at where the pilot side exhaust exits it seems higher than a Luscombe.
