Re: Wanted to cut out on landing

Be VERY careful of tightening the fasteners to stop weeping around the edges. First, the joint weeps. It is NORMAL! An old timer who was around when they did it said they changed the color of the carbs to hide the fuel stains from the separation joint weeping. It shouldn't DRIP, but weeping is normal.
The reason most drip is someone tried to tighten the fasteners to stop the weeping and warped the castings. There is a specified torque for the fasteners. Same problem with the mixture (on the carbs with mixture). Ham fisted ape mechanics over tightening the fasteners is one of the big problems with these carbs.

Try Mike's Fuel Metering in Tulsa,Oklahoma. They have did several PS5 pressure carbs for me and they were second to none. They also done a stromburg for me once with the same quality and their price beat anyone else by almost half!

Something everyone should be made aware of, especially in the cooler weather. I found this Continental Service Bulletin when going through my files. The carb company that rebuilt my carb included this information upon return of my carburetor.

Good stuff Marty. I remember seeing this in one of the ancient news letters. Like our planes, some info is ageless.

Yea, good reminder Marty, thanks. I went flying today and thought about this as well. A little extra attention seems to be needed, and I also have the metal prop.

Re: Wanted to cut out on landing

Finally got the carb sent off today. I was waiting for The Stromberg Specialist fellow,...but he must be taking awhile to heal from his medical procedures. Kevin thanks for the Tulsa name, I sent it to them. They are closer to me and thus less time shipping back and forth. Price not to bad at $550.

Just curious, what Stromberg Specialist are you talking about. Not the guy in the Chicago area??? Thanks.

Re: Wanted to cut out on landing

I don't see a reference to a Stromberg Specialist, Tom. See post 30 about a Stromberg guy online. I recommended KPS but no one called them a 'specialist'. Neither did Kevin for the Tulsa folks. I was asking who he spoke with to see if it was the Chicago guy.

The only one I know of who touts himself a specialist is the gentleman in Chicago who, in my humble opinion, overcharges greatly for a carb overhaul. I have spoken to him by phone on several occasions and know of his gimmick that he thinks is worth gold. Machining the seat down to allow full movement of the needle. Over the years he has collected a ton of Stromberg parts, experimenting with them and learning the carbs weren't all made the same, namely the needle not allowing full travel. He allegedly got FAA approval to machine the seat down to allow full movement. For that he asks $800 for an overhaul.

Yeah it was that guy in IL Marty. He charges 850 bucks. The price and him being down from a surgery , I just decided to send it to Tulsa. The cost will be 550 bucks now,...so I'll save a little.

Re: Wanted to cut out on landing

Whew! Sorry for the delay in letting everyone know the results. Actually just got done! Mike's in Tulsa did a great job on the carb. Speaking to them they said there was some crud in the idle,..wasn't totally blocked but more than likely causing some of the problem. It was leaking fuel pretty bad around the bowl,...so even though it cost me, it needed to be done. We do have another winner about the primer! After installation of the carb and running her,...she still had a stumble and a rough idle. That was a whole lot less costly to fix! LOL The old girl is running great , have not flown her yet. Leaving for GA for Christmas with the folks in the am, A&P had to cut out before paper was done, and I just don't feel right without those i's dotted and t's crossed. I'll fly her when we get back to TN. Thanks again guys for the online diagnosis ! We had two problems and now have two fixes!

Great to hear, Patrick. Let us know if she runs ok during flight.
