  • Open cowl B Model cabin heat valve

Can anyone supply a photograph of the cabin heat valve installed on the firewall of an open cowl '39/'40 B Mdl T-Craft. It is different than the one used on the closed cowl B Mdl. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Mike Girdley

Mike, I don't think they were any different.

      Hey Tom,
The pressure cowled valve will fit except the angled back exhaust/overboard pipe interfers with the firewall on the open cowl version. I wondered if the valve was the same but that the exhaust/overboard pipe went straight down out of the valve without the angled back portion. If so, how far? It doesn't look like it exits the bottom cowl. Any thoughts?

        Hi Mike,
Here's a shot of the box on 20442 a 1939 BL. I can get a better one for you tomorrow if this is what you are looking for.

          Howard,
That is exactly what I wanted. As Tom observed, they are the same as the closed cowl version but without the exhaust/overboard tube, as I suspected. Thanks to you and Tom.
          Later,

Now that I look at it again, I remember the fellow ( an IA) that I bought the plane from said he had built a new box, and this was for the Lycoming engine. In these pics you can see there might be some contortions as I change over to the Continental....... If you need a certain photo angle or measurement let me know. h

Howard are you going to use the carb air box patterned off of the one I sent you? That copy you made me was was absolutely beautiful. Who did the welding? Tim

I found a very well built and compact cabin heat valve online from a supplier for the Vans RV group. It has the heated air inlet on top, making for a short SCAT tube run from the heat muff. There was no original valve with the project, so I was forced to go this route. It will be noted on a Form 337 that this was done.

                  Hi Tim,

Yup, I had a metal guy in town make two off of your pattern. He did do a nice job. He said that if he'd known what he was getting in to he wouldn't have done it. :-) Those 180 degree bends had him going. I can get you a name, I think my usual guy brought his friend in to do those welds.

I just did a 5 day round robin to Alaska, my airplane had not flown in over 3 years, pulled the NEW SLICK MAGS and fixed the bad carbon brushes in them, also did the service bulletin for the points, put them back it, put gas in her, cleaned the gascolator, changed the oil and away we went. I had to move it 70 miles to another airport and park it, they were closing the one I was parked at. I also stopped by and picked up that carb air box from storage, a little surface rust on the new metal but it was like new still. The duffle bag they were in got munched though so I hope they survived. I also brought the molds for the prewar curved leading edges to make them from carbon/glass. Tim

Here are the 3 that are not installed on my airplane, one had a bracket air filter installed on it...
