  • Wing Root Fairings

    HI All

To make wing root fairings for CF-CLR I bought a 12' sheet of 2024 T3 .020" and cut two strips.

I have enough material left to cut several more pairs if there is interest for the whole sheet (which means I need commitments for about ten pairs). They would be the same width as my original BC12D fairings and 12' long. You will of course need to trim to fit and salvage your own hardware.

I was thinking $30/pair plus shipping from zip 55605 (all shipped at the same time).

    Whadyathink?

            Re: Wing Root Fairings

This sounds like a great deal! I have made several sets and it can be a tough job getting the edge against the fuselage on the bottom to fit well. What worked for me was to wrap the metal around the wing outboard and slide it in the the first point touches the fuselage on the bottom. Then I used the fuselage side to mark the metal parallel at all points on the wing bottom length. I cut it WIDE of the line (ruined several pieces of metal before I learned) and trimmed a little at a time until I got it to touch the side of the fuselage from TE to the LE. The top of the fairing now overlapped the top of the fuselage enough to snap a line for a nice straight fit over the fuselage top. The area around the windshield was the hardest but it was MUCH easier with the windshield OFF the fuselage. I used a piece of cardboard to make a template AGAIN CUTTING WIDE FOR TRIMMING.

I ended up with two fairings, each one piece all the way around. A LOT of work, but well worth it.

I would like a set as well. Ours could be better fitted I think.

                Re: Wing Root Fairings

Are the wing root covers one piece that wraps around the leading and trailing edges and is tightened with the cinch bolt on the trailing edge?
Some photos look like they are two or maybe three pieces. My project did not have them anymore so am trying to get a handle on them.
                Thanks!

The original factory bands were one piece, but they are BRUTAL to get straight and to fit tight to the fuselage. That is why you see so many that are spliced together. I wasted a LOT of aluminum to get a set that fit well.

All of the OEM wing bands I have seen had a splice about 18" back on the top of the wing.

                        Re: Wing Root Fairings

Yes the originals are two pieces spot welded together. I don't have a spot welder and the material is too thin to rivet flush-both-sides so I did the one-piece option.

I posted info on my blog on how I trimmed them to fit which may be useful. Bottom line is make some templates out of your old fairings, or card,, and then trim a little at a time for a good fit.

Looks like we have enough interest to make this work. I'm "cramming" to renew my instrument rating at the moment so I need a little time but we can start by sending me a PM with your info. I'll respond with a mailing address and you can just snail mail a cheque (which won't delay shipping as I'll take your word that the cheque is in the mail!)

Tom, I have never seen any spot welds (some with rivets, but none looked original, WAY to straight and nice to be that old!) I had a couple of old beat up sets that were one piece with the threaded fastener in the TE. Got an photos of the spot welded ones? Wonder if that was how they handled it when the wrap around didn't come out aligned. My method of correcting misalignment results in a lot of scrap! Paper templates help, but will stretch and distort.

Scott mentioned the spot welds. All I have seen was a single rivet.
