Wow! I am impressed! Just sitting back and watching you guys respond is amazing! Thanks for the info. I think I will contact Air Repair on Monday and see what I can find out also. I really just like the old look to the switch. I have seen the information about welding the key to the inside of the handle..the ultimate solution. There was one on Barnstormers for $125 - supposedly serviceable - but it was sold a few hours before I called the guy. A dollar short ....
Don't weld it to the handle! The lever is just thin metal on the lower one and cast pot metal on the top one. It is harder to do with the cast one. I just made a mold from the cast lever and cast a new one around the key. The thin stamped lever you just epoxy the key into the lever. Be careful so it fits nice and flush so you can't see that the lever can be pulled out with the key. The other nice thing is you can use the mag switch with a key with no lever if you need to.

That's good info Hank, I work with a welder that has welded to beer cans together, after cutting off the base, so it was the thinest part of the sides placed end to end, he said it is not that hard, easy for him to say, gary
The welder who did my 45 fuselage taught welding and was an inspector doing Nuke Sub welding. His work is pure art. He was able to do the aluminum can weld trick too. Amazing! I found out that the aluminum in a whole can forms a REALLY small ball! There isn't much there.

Hi All,
A detail but unless you have an airframe mechanic rating (half of the A & P) you can't make that log entry or independently make this alteration.
Either do this under the supervision of your licensed mechanic (and have him sign the log) or have him do it.

I used the term "weld" as an all encompassing term for attaching, but thanks for the advice. I am working with a very good IA who has restored 18 airplanes and built 5 biplanes from scratch - and is a good friend. This guy can do anything. One of those guys that I wish I knew 10% of what he has forgotten. Actually restoring it in his hanger/workshop. Working towards being airborne late spring/early summer. Starting the fuselage and tail feathers next week. Wings just need cleaned up, and the same with the ailerons. Very fortunate with this project. Low time engine with great compression, but are going to open it up and see what we have. I found a set of Tcraft heel brakes, so we put right seat brakes in it. Will be retiring at some point, plan on never selling this one, and plan on using it at some point for tail wheel check outs and spin training. Have to get new struts from Alaska. Mine are good, but no interest in dealing with that bull____ AD.
Do I sound excited about this airplane? My mom worked for Taylorcraft in 46-47 doing covering and painting, and then for Dorothy Ferris in the 70's, and I am from Alliance, so the airplanes have always been kind of a part of my life.
Think I will see about getting the A7. I just like the look and not concerned about someone stealing it, so the key thing isn't really a factor for me. You guys are great! Thanks for all the info.
Great story, Gary. A7's pop up every now and then on Ebay, but the prices get a little silly sometimes. I suppose it is supply and demand at its finest.
I had to learn this when I would have to edit my post so don't feel bad. After you have made a post, look at the bottom where you can make selections to 'Edit Post', 'Reply' or 'Reply with Quote'. All you have to do is select 'Edit Post' then make your correction and select 'Save'. You don't have to put a reason in for the edit. It is up to you.
