1946 Taylorcraft BC12D Landing Gear Tube Sizes & Bungies

Hello!

New member here, and happy new owner of a 1946 BC12D.

I am doing some restoration work on it, and it appears that someone had repaired one of the landing gear legs with a tube that is the wrong diameter. I was wondering if there are any drawings available that give the correct tube sizes for the landing gear legs, so I can have it repaired properly. I have tried contacting the Taylorcraft company directly for information with no luck yet.

I also need to replace the suspension bungees, and wanted to confirm that these ones from Aircraft Spruce are correct and that I need 4 of them, before placing an order, or if there is a better option anyone knows about?

That is the correct shock cord, and yes it takes four of them. Which tube are you asking about? Maybe a picture of the repair would help. Sometimes on these old airplanes nothing is standard.

I am new to the Taylorcraft world and still have lots to learn. After a closer look and comparing to some images I've found online it appears that the tube I was concerned about may actually be correct/original. I have attached a couple pictures of the pilot side gear leg. I was looking at the smaller 3/4" tube going into the larger tube at the end. But that larger tube extends to where the bungees mount and looks like it may be correct. May just be a way of making the gear that I haven't seen before. I was concerned that the smaller tube may have been added in place of what should be larger diameter as a repair.

If you are referring to the gap where the tube slides in? That is the way it is supposed to be. That gear does have an extra gusset added at the corner though.

Mine doesn't have that extra triangular gusset either. Perhaps that's a repair?

Mine does not have the gusset. The tubes are 7/8 x .049

Morgan, welcome to the forum, glad to have you aboard and happy you are keeping a Tcraft flying.

You mentioned calling the factory, just so you know, there is no factory, the owners of the type certificate ran off (escaped) to Mexico. There is no support there.
You should also know that the Foundation is not active, don't send money there. However, there is still quite good info on the website that you should utilize.

You have a fellow Province mate that has a work of art blog you should look at too, it is an outstanding resource. Scott is a recent EAA Grand Champion.

The PEOPLE on the Forum and on Face Book are fantastic resources. Lots of us are working on getting the Foundation back in order. It will take some time. Some of us also want to get regional clubs going again, but for now, the owners themselves are the greatest resource and they provide more support than most factories and ANY other type club I have worked with. Just ask. We enjoy getting more planes up and running!

I appreciate the warm welcome, and all of your responses and information. I miss-typed in my earlier post, the tube is 7/8", not 3/4".
Thanks for the heads up about the factory and foundation. I will check out the links you gave too.

Right now I am just picking away at it when I find some free time in the evenings, but will definitely post more pictures as it progresses and gets closer to the air. I'm sure I will have many more questions as I go!
