$145 for the rear piece is very reasonable. I would have expected twice that.

      Re: F-19 Headliner

Thanks for the encouragement on the price - I really mean that!

If I make 10 pieces and sell them all I come out a little bit ahead. But frankly, considering how my own airplane budget is really tight, I would consider making a fabric or a plywood head liner if the price were much over $150. It is just that I have more time than $ to invest in the plane. If the economy were better right now I would not have this opportunity at all, but as it is, a local manufacturer (whom I taught to fly) is needing work for his people.

As far as the question from Forrest about making the small pieces, those could be done by bending a sheet of plastic over a male mold by hand. I don't see how I can vacu-form them economically given the cost of the vacuum mold.

Anyway, it is all a learning process here. It will be great if these turn out nicely.

Dan I finally got around to scanning the 337 for my skylight which i think is pretty similar to what is on the taylorcraft site already. No chance in getting pics of the skylight though till it warms up and all the ice melts away, but will try to tackle that as soon as I get the chance. Here are the docs.

I would be interested in a front one...my rear portion is good. An prospect of getting the small front one's that Forrest mentioned. I need those too.

            Re: F-19 Headliner

I finally got all the needed pieces together to vacu-form some aft headliners to fit the F-19. The finished product is made of ABS plastic and thicker material than the original. The color is black but paint can make it anything you like.

I had the original liner digitized and then a (large) male mould was made on a CNC router. A 4x4 foot sheet of 1/8 inch plastic was heated and vacuumed onto the mould. The results are very nice. At the thinnest point the plastic drew down to about .070 inches which is still thicker than the original .065 shell. It is flexible enough to shape it into the top of the plane and it is very tough. We only ruined three sheets of plastic to get the temperatures and pressures correct. As it turns out, ABS plastic absorbs moisture and I had to build a drying booth to get the plastic dried out lest moisture should steam and burst out like chicken pox all over the plastic. I'm happy to say that the plastic is pox-free.

One headliner is shown more or less in place in the photo below exactly as I received it from the plastics shop. A small amount of final trimming will be needed to completely fit it up.

At the moment, I have one for myself and 14 more up for sale at $150 plus shipping.

              Re: F-19 Headliner

Nice work Mark! Is there something there to support the center where it sags when fully installed? Something like that would be nice for my old 41 BC, cover up unsightly stuff and easy to clean. I could see that for the whole headliner as you could mold it very close to the existing tubing, leaving more room in the cabin. However probably heavier then the cloth and certainly heavier then nothing, which is what I currently plan.

                Re: F-19 Headliner

My old shabby headliner has a couple cut-outs near the center where it must have been fastened to the top of the plane or to the front headliner.

I don't believe this will fit a '41 ??? It is a copy of the headliner over the extended baggage area of the 19.

It would be a simple matter to fabricate an attachment to an adel clamp, or to make a stiffener. For example, the new plastic is thick enough to accept a screw through it into a batten.

I have a new respect for the moulded plastic business. It took a couple of man-days to fabricate the mould and therein lies 90% of the cost of doing business. I was lucky enough to have given flying lessons to a guy that runs a plastics fab shop. Without that connection (and the poor economy) he would have turned me down -- a fabrication run of only 15 was not in his best interest. And I suppose that with a potential market of 4 I will chalk most of the cost up to education no worries.

                  Hi,
I'm interested in a F19 head liner. Looks like you posted this about 15 years ago. Any chance you still have any or could give me an idea on how to proceed or find one.
                  Thanks,
                  Kyle

                    Mark:

The next time I remove/reinstall my headliner will likely be the last time -- it's getting to be quite brittle. The proposed pricing you cited for a new one a while back didn't scare me then; any update on pricing and availability today?

                      Re: F-19 Headliner

OK, Back from road trip so here is the skinny on F-19 headliners.

I have about 15 vacu-formed parts for the AFT headliner of the F-19. These are made of black ABS and heavier duty than the original. The male mold was digitized from an original part. This is pretty tough plastic and won't shatter like an old, dried-out. original

I figure I will keep one for my SLOW project. The rest are available at $50 plus shipping. At current prices the shipping will probably cost more than the part.

Here is an old photo of how the headliner was placed into an F-19 to see if it fit.

Apparently the photos do not re-post ... or at least I'm ignorant.
But on 5/31/12 I posted photos of the old and new headliner and also the headliner set into a F-19 fuselage. Follow the F-19 Headliner thread back and see the photos.

I don't need one, but don't mind paying for one if your willing to hold it until the next time I am in the area to pick it up. I'm sure shipping would cost more than the part does.
