    Re: Fuselage corrosion

Good news on the fuselage. Please take pictures of the seat mod. Thanks for your help this afternoon.

      Phil,
If you are anywhere close enough to get with Tim I would bet there is a lot you guys could cooperate on. How far across Texas are you? I am betting you guys will have a lot of the same questions and if you can coordinate at all it may help you both.....even if you ARE too far apart to actually work together.

I live about 4 hour drive away, not too bad.

Phil, you are welcome to come look at my project anytime. There are also a bunch of flying TCraft in East Texas. Many of them frequent this forum.

You asked about the seatback mod. See the thread below:

            Phil-
Welcome to the group. You will find a fairly active Texas contingent with aircraft based all over Texas. There is a flyin at little town in East Texas called Reklaw that will be held Oct 26-28. It is a lot of fun and very busy. You will definitely see some Taylorcrafts there. Might be worth the drive to scope out out a few assembled aircraft. If you have questions about parts, post a picture, and some one will tell you what the part is and where it goes on the airplane.

              Mike,

I once made passes at Reklaw during the fly in with my Yak formation group, but never landed. I have an RV4 that may be out of the shop by that weekend, I will try to get there. Also, Bob Wagstaff was suggested in an earlier post. I know Bob fairly well, I will stop to visit.

              Thanks

                Tim,

I eventually will be visiting family in Baton Rouge and will make an effort to see your project. I have a few favorite restaurants in your area I would like to visit while there.

                  Re: Fuselage corrosion

Yesterday, I swallowed hard and took the next step towards recovery. I took a hacksaw to the first corroded tube in my fuselage. I was really encouraged by what we found on the inside of the tube. I was really kind of expecting the wall thickness to be substantially reduced on the bottom side (where all the holes were). But it really looked quite good.

I could also see the reason that the corrosion didn't go all the way to the lowest end of the tube. Because that area was almost full of linseed oil.

That brings up another question. How do I treat the inside of the tube for corrosion resistance after the welding is done and what do I use (linseed oil? something else?)?

                    Tim,
Use Polyfiber's Tube Oil. It's by FAR the best product out there and light years ahead of Linseed oil!!! There are directions on the can to figure out the proper amount.

Another vote for tubeseal. It creeps out of every darn orifice (of the fuselage, you understand!).

My website describes linseed oil, but I used tubeseal.

The photo below shows me using a horse syringe to do the fuselage from the sternpost. The darn stuff leaked all overe the shop!

                        Re: Fuselage corrosion

An update on my fuselage frame. Unfortunately, while my IA started replacing tubes in November, he ran out of time and my fuselage spent a bunch of months in his shop without any progress.
So a couple of weeks ago, we moved it to the racecar welder (who has a bunch of experience doing similar repair on old airplanes).
Dig this picture of my fuselage in his shop.
You can see a bunch of dragsters in the background. One is covered with a white sheet. Check out the drop tank up high.
It looks like he'll be finished with the whole job tomorrow. He's putting TubeSeal in all the tubes today.
