Another thing that I have doubts about.
Can y'all take a look at the wood structure in the picture below and tell me if that is generally what it is supposed to look like.

    Hi Tim

From your photo some of the bungee looks frayed and I think should be replaced before they fail, a failure could cause a real surprise on a landing.

      Re: Bungee opening

      Sorry Richard,
I should have said that I'm in the process of recovering my '46 BC-12D. As soon as I finish my fuselage rotator jig, I'm going to cut those bungees off and remove the landing gear.
And I'm going to cut the fabric off that is in the picture above.
My question is if the wood frame that holds the fabric around the bungees is correct (same thing that is on all of your airplanes)? Or is it something original that was concocted by a CoonAss from South Louisiana (like me) because he figured no one would ever check down here.

        Tim:

Here's my (old) 1941 Taylorcraft for comparison (I think this is the one you flew in).

That's not to say yours is wrong, right or indifferent...but if it has been successful during your ownership, then I'd suggest you leave it the same.

It does look like you have a centre belly stringer, whereas mine has two.

I can't remember the exact number difference but there is a difference between my 41 and Tim's 46 on stringers. I will try to get out to look at my 41 tomorrow and get back to you, I won't see Tim's for a week or two yet. We are all recuperating from Oshkosh! :-) Larry

            Re: Bungee opening

I wish I had pictures of mine but like yours the thin pieces that are on each side of the large opening were way too flimsy so I built a new one from Oak, from Lowes. I used aircraft epoxy to glue them and nailed it together, then I expoxy varnished the whole thing. This is a stout piece now and the shrinking of the material did not distort it. It will be with this plane long after I'm gone.

              Hi Tim,

I looks like the wood I have seen in them. You have just one belly stringer many have 2 but that may be a year and model difference.

I can't tell the condition of your bungees by their appearance here. I have seen frayed bungees that were good and unfrayed ones that were bad. How did they behave under load? That is important. Did they stretch with the just the airplane's weight? That would be a bad sign.

What did get my attention on your picture was this: I can't discern a snare cable in there. Did I miss it?

                Re: Bungee opening

OK thanks Dave, and Rob, and Larry, and Ray,
You've given me some needed confidence that my wood is not so out-of-the-ordinary.
I'll leave it as is. Any idea why there is a 1.5" -ish hole in the middle of one piece?
I saw a similar hole in one of Rob's pictures.

                  Re: Bungee opening

its probably a lightening hole (in case you get hit by lightning it goes right thru )

on the older ones that I saw that had those beefy blocks made of balsa wood they were solid, no hole

Wow, you have an extra set of turnbuckles behind the kick plate on the pilots side. HANDY!

Hank, that's for the flipper trim. The lever is just ahead of the kick panel.

If I ever find a 40 fuselage for the Josh project I am gong to need some photo support to set up the trim system. My planes all have the elevator trim.
                          Hank

Still looking for an orphaned 40 fuselage to restore to original. Anyone out there have a paperless project pile of parts that they want to see become a certified plane again? I have lots of parts and good paperwork, but a beyond hope fuselage (and if you guys know me, when I say a fuselage is beyond hope, it is REALLY beyond hope!)

Yup, we can do photo support;-) The flipper trim is a very simple system, and I like things simple........h

I had one, but it went to help someone else.
