  • '41 Air cleaner?

Finally finishing up the 41 bc12-65 deluxe and it has no air cleaner, just the open intake sticking out of the lower cowl.

Is there a stock filter avail, or what have you guys used?

    Thanks...

    Re: '41 Air cleaner?

Most of the planes use the Bracket filter. I have a fairing for the cowl, but no extra housings for the element itself. They are pretty common. Seems like a new one was under $300.

Don't trash the straight intake stack. Those of us who like originality like them, but you need to be flying from a clean field!

I actually have a bracket, housing and filter that came with a spare carb, but not the extra cowling piece.

When you mentioned yours, were you perhaps offering it for sale?

      Thanks...

Like Hank says, unless you are flying in the Sahara (sand) then keep the original air intake if you can. When I refurbished my 1946 model, I put it back to the unfiltered intake. It looks better than the Brackett filter, and the additional intake of grass and insects improve combustion (it's fresh carbon, eh?).

As an aside, whenever I taxy out with the carb heat "hot", innocent pilot-rated passengers ask about all the cr@p that might be ingested due to unfiltered air with carb heat "hot". After landing, I show them my nice unfiltered cold air.

I could be talked out of the fairing piece. I need to find it and take a picture. No idea what shape it is in. I didn't like the way it looked (just an opinion, I like the ones like Robert has, especially on a pe-war). I haven't redone my cowl with a flush patch to put the old type back on. I am trying to focus only on what is needed to get back in the air, then I will do more "cosmetics".

I have a pre war chief that I work on that has a field approval for a home made foam element inside the air intake. It is just a couple of pieces of heavy screen with a cut to shape piece of Brackett foam element. I think it could be done and not look to bad. Tom

Ernie Bryant had the original intake and had a home made filter element that fit over the tube. I am sure there are some photos around of it. He said it worked great and was very inconspicuous.

If you guys are talking about the piece that adapts the bracket to the cowl, there was a guy out of St. Louis that was making them.

This is the St. Louis guy I could not get ahold of, link: http://www.liming.org/aircraftmetalarts/index.html

And I think David Wenglarz can make them, too. Thread: http://vb.taylorcraft.org/showthread...light=wenglarz

Can you tell us what it is? It is too small to see.

                        Re: '41 Air cleaner?

That drawing is in the Lycoming O-145 Service Manual. I could be wrong but believe those were only used on the B models with the open cowl. Anyway good luck finding one today.

My Lycoming is still on unfiltered air. Am open to ideas that won't rob power.

The BL-12 had a higher empty weight than the earlier models and mine only likes to climb solo with empty wing tanks on cool days.

Has anyone used the Challenger paper filter? It seems having a greater surface area it would be less restrictive to airflow than a Brackett. And not sure whether the A-65 air cleaner will fit a Lycoming but have seen them on eBay with something very similar. If anyone knows more than this I could sure use the help. My project really wants to get back in the air one day.
