    Re: Cowl anti chafe material

I found an ancient picture (1941) from the Alliance library showing a Taylorcraft employee attaching it with what they call a "staple machine" but the "staples" look like pieces of wire. Sort of like a 1.5 or 2" staple. Amazing what you can find with a magnifying glass! There is a copy of the picture on page 117 of Chet's book.

Hank, originally stapled but the adhesives are so much better nowadays! Thanks guys for the hints.

I think stapled to the nose bowl, but riveted to the boot cowl. At least that is how I remember it. Tom

OK dumb question, but how does the glue stand up to heat, cold, vibration, and general wear and tear over time compared to the staples. My 41 has the staples still! I looked at them and decided with a little patience (well OK, a lot of patience!) I could duplicate them.

Tom, I'll have to look at the nose bowl for staple holes. That would make sense as I would think you would have to have access to both sides to staple. I'll have to find that old factory picture showing exactly that.

            Here it is:

              Re: Cowl anti chafe material

I have a friend that has been restoring cubs and other AC for years. He uses Plybond contact cement. It was made in Ohio and used to hold the first blimps together. The secret to a good bond is to pre-coat the Chafe material at least two times as well as the cowl. I have a friend who restores cars in Phonex and uses DAP contact cement because he says it holds up better than 3m in heat. 3m also make a great glue , but I don't have the exact name. My nose bowl still has the staples in the original material. I am pretty sure they were used because they one. had the machine (also used it to hold on baffling seal and some trim around fairings. It looked like crap and the staples defeat the purpose of the aniti-chafe that it holds on. The steel staples wear the cowling faster than anything. Hope this helps

                Laz,

I Finally got back home to find the box with the Chafe material on my desk. Looks great! It should go well with the new top and bottom cowls when they arrive and get installed. Thanks for making this available to the group!

                    Hi Laz-
I am sending a check for $20 (feet) plus $5 shipping Monday. We are doing a cowl overhaul and need some anti-chafe.
                    I PM'd my address.
                    Thanks

We are close to mounting the anti chafe, however it is tuff stuff. I had to make a custom hole cutter and spin it, as just pushing will not get the job done. Even my new leather hole punch couldn't cut it. But thanks for making this available to us. Larry

The way to cut a hole in it is to use one of the cheep hole punch sets from china that Harbor freight and other places sell. You need a big hammer and some wood behind it. Whack the H out of it and it will cut it. Your leather punch will be ruined quickly even if it works. The Cheep punches and be re sharpened on a bench grinder or by hand.

That's basically what I did, but even cheaper, as I found a water pipe that had the proper inside dia.a nd put it in my lathe and made a cutter out of it. By turning it a bit with pressure it works great and makes a nice clean hole. I tried the "whack it" method and was not happy with the quality of the hole made. With this cutter now all it takes is pressure of my hand as I rotate and it cuts it like soft butter.

Thanks to laz for the 3/4inch chafe tape- looks good and arrived fast. Got it yesterday in the mail and its already installed on the cowl. The chafe strip is marginally thicker than the old felt strips previously installed, which made the cowl mighty tough to install (it was already too tight). We came up with a placement that works though.

DAP Contact cement is perfect. Sticks really good, and was easy to apply. I used the Harbor Freight hole punches, but they needed a steel backing plate to make a clean hole. Punching on wood did not work.
