      Re: what about o235 lycombing

My opinion is that a C90 or stroked C85 will outperform an O235. Just because there is more HP does not mean more performance....they are kinda heavy. Prices are getting kind of high on the Continentals...but approval would be very difficult for the Lycoming conversion....field approvals are difficult to get these days. Remember that even a new cowl is expensive...and can quickly offset the cost savings of a cheaper motor.....then there's a motor mount exhaust...the list goes on... Your plane looks tough with those awesome bush wheels Chuck...Nice!

I have had both and unless you have a climb prop on the continental, it will not keep up with the lycoming, and then you won't have cruise. yes, very expensive to swap over and no nose bowls or top cowl spines available. I have been looking for a f-21 nose bowl for several years with no luck for clip wing project

Your probably right...I have the continentals so it was pure opinion....I have a climb prop on both the C90 and the C85 though and they both cruise at about 105mph....Not too bad. I bet the Lycoming would cruise around 115-120 eh?

For some background on the topic...type in "Alsworth" in the search window up in the upper right hand of this page. Dick

They basically used supercub cowling/mount on a taylorcraft. Custom mount, most were converted in the 70's-80's, The only way to do this swap is with an STC under the current regulations. Do a search on here to find their info. Tim

                  Re: Alsworth connection

I have a F21A with the 118 hp 0235 it climbs at 900-1000 fpm and cruise at 2400 rpm is 110. It is a little slow but gets off the ground good. The prop is a metal Sensenich 72-53 and the aircraft weight is 1100 lbs. It has a full IFR panel and you could buy it for less then installing an engine in yours. Mike

it would do that easy. we had a '80 F-21, basically a bc12d with a 235 unlike the later models which had quite a few changes. I did a flat out 2 way average one time and was just over 130 on the gps. It was a hoss. My deluxe had the o-200 on it, 100lbs lighter, but unless it had a climb prop on it 74-43, just didn't have the same guts as the lycoming. I put a cruise prop on it and got the cruise up to 115-118, but was sluggish in climb due to the weight (925 empty). Loved the f-21 while we had it. really hated to sell it.

A couple of pix of Taylorcrafts powered with Lyc. 0-290. Blue/Yellow was an experimental BC-12D and the Blue/White was an F-19. Really helped on floats. You can see the two different cowling styles.
