I have posted in the past several stations in our area on this site. It is a great resource for mogas.

Don't forget to add those stations you are aware of.
    Cheers,

      Re: Alcohol free gas!

Speaking of gas... On the front page of the Baltimore sun (Sunday) yesterday there was a lengthy article about a Globe Swift that quit in flight over the Chesapeake Bay. It went in, killing the mother of the pilot. He made it to shore. I immed. thought of the Mooney that quit on me, 400 feet in the air on takeoff at Teterboro , NJ. 1984. ( got the gear down and landed but it was very close) The bottom sump, under the pilots seat was full of "jelly" according to the mechanic. Water has seeped in through the Gas caps (flush in the wings) (The Swift is similar.) and loaded the sump. I had drained all the sumps but it still happened. Later learned that Mooneys, left outside for a time were famous for this. I also thought about car gas and the many reports of it degrading if left too long without being used. Engines don't usually quit for no reason. IE: I have not had a car engine die in 30-40 years. This pilot elected to fly VFR with a 2000 foot ceiling and no mae wests or other flotation gear. The bay is wide at the point he had problems. I have no idea what happened but it sure got my attention! JC

I'm disappointed. I clicked on this thread because it was either "alcohol, free" or "free gas".

If anyone can work out a way to get a decent gin & tonic out of the waste alcohol from aviators' fuel, please let me know. I can provide the limes & tonic.

Take a look at this link...

          http://www.portablefuelsystems.com

Nick Meyers sells a device that separates alcohol/ethanol from auto fuel.. Microprocessor controlled. Fully automated, Patent applied for. He was at Copperstate Fly in last month.

            Robert,

I'm catching up on the tcraft forum while on vacation in Fiji. Saw your posting and remembered a photo I took yesterday. I like the way you think ... (;f

What's that blue stuff? (I've never been to Fiji, so I don't know the local custom!)

A proper G&T involves demerara sugar & a straw, but it's a bit of an antiquated Indian Raj English tradition that the recipe is secret.

Dang secrets! The blue is just a colored stripe on the glass. There was a straw when I started, but it must have been between my teeth when I took the photo. Tanquerey gin, tonic water, and a lime is the recipe here.

I wish I had the tcraft here, it looks like it would be an interesting island to explore by air. Seems to be very little private / general aviation here ... mostly small regional carriers.

Hate to punch a big hole in all this dreaming about free alcohol from fuel, but the feds make dam sure the ethanol plants mix in gasoline just as soon the purity of the ethanol produced has been determined. 5% gas is added to make what we call denatured alcohol. They blend so well separation again is almost impossible.

PS: Having lived in the islands I can attest to the fact that alcohol taken in small doses, sitting on the beach, always tastes better!

It says that all fuel in Ak is ethanol-free, is that true?

                          Re: Alcohol free gas!

In Nebraska it is illegal to sell gasoline with ethenol in it unless the amount is posted on the pump. They tried to remove that last session but backed down because of the resistance from those who say we have the right to know when it is added so we have free choice. I still test because the law is not going to keep you alive if the engine quits at a bad time.

Its my understanding that the gasoline,if you can call it that,is at a lower octane level when produced, then brought up to the rating on the pump with the alcohol. If the process seperates the two, what do you bring it back up with?

                              Re: Alcohol free gas!

The fuel our engines were designed to use didn't have a high octane level originally. Straight unleaded, no alcohol gasoline will work fine in an A-65. Lead was added to raise the octane level which prevents detonation in high compression engines. When the lead was removed, they had to add other octane boosters to keep the level high enough for those engines, but since we use LOW compression engines we never needed it in the first place.
One of the early fuel producers was Phillips 66. They started in 1917 and were a major producer of aviation fuel before the second world war. I was told that the "66" originally referred to the octane level in their fuel but their aviation fuel was 73, which just happens to be the minimum octane required by Teledyne Continental in my engine manual. Normal unleaded no alcohol gasoline is usually 83 octane.
                              Don't sweat it!
                              Hank

Just keep the alcohol out and you will be fine for octane.
