    Re: Soft Cylinder

For the time it takes to monkey with the valve, just pull it and do it right! You can give a better examination of the cylinder and fix what else is wrong. I have 2 spare cores if you want to just swap it. They are .015. You can also clean up the crud on the piston and pin and poke your head inside the case to check the cam lobes. Tim

That's how I did mine and I noticed the ring gaps were big (all other parts were in spec), replacing the rings may stop that oil from burning and clogging the quide.

I'm not sure if an A-65 is similar to the O-200 valve system.

On the O-200 the Exhaust Rocker Arm has a "Drip Hole" that lubes & cools the Exhaust Valve & guide.

Several engines with premature guide wear had Intake & Exhaust switched.

All Exhaust types work but you might burn SLIGHTLY more oil.

Would that help or hurt a sticking valve?

          Re: Soft Cylinder

I talked with my AI yesterday and his suggestion was to squirt a little Marvel Mystery oil into the offending cylinder and pull it through several times. If I can get the compression back, run it up, if normal fly it hard in a high pattern for a while. If that doesn't work he will pull the cylinder. Hopefully I can get to it this next week end. Work keeps getting in the way but with no work I would have to sell the plane.
On a side note has anyone had Wag Aero seal their struts and were they pleased. That inspection comes up again this winter and I am thinking I will bite the bullet and do the other 3, one is already a sealed strut.

The people are WAG are great. Unfortunatly I did a DUMB thing and stored my struts lying down and water laid in the tubes. Mine failed the inspection. Good thing is they applied the inspection cost to the purchase of new sealed struts which are great. They even shipped my old ones back with the new ones (the old one failed because NO rust is allowed, the material is still good) I plan to blast the interior, pull test them and use them for a homebuilt project I have in mind.

              Re: Soft Cylinder

The weekend weather has been lousy out here but I did go to the hanger today and after the lifter had bled off I had compression on all four. I did pour about a tablespoon of MMO into a couple of the cylinders and turned it through a few times to work it out around the valves. The weather map had a red dot for here today with wind, low clouds and rain. Bad for harvest and flying but should help out the fire danger a bunch. We had one fire that burned 40 square miles last week. At least I have hope that the cure for my engine will not be so bad and maybe not involve pulling cylinders.

                Re: Soft Cylinder

Well I have been putting about a tablespoon of MMO in each cylinder and pulling it through several times to work it into the guides. Today the wind was 12 knots but right down the grass runway, the compression felt even and when I started it she ran nice and smooth. I flew a 2,000 foot AGL pattern for about a half hour and as everything was as smooth as could be I ventured away from the airport. This was as per my mechenic's dirrection. Now I just need to fly the devil out of it and stay with the auto fuel to prevent lead poisoning.
