I've wanted to put the Grove gear on my L-2. In addition to eliminating the bungees, I think it would improve aerodynamics.

Kevin i couldn,t have said it any better, your correct i own a 170B, a cub, and a Taylorcraft ,your correct pilots come in to fast, bounce then blame the Aircraft.

I had streamlined tail brace wires on a Super Skybolt (300HP), S1-T Pitts and an Extra 230. A few thousand snap rolls without any problems.

The rich guys don't know what they are missing, but it sure is fun to show them! Most won't give up their speed wagons, but some HAVE been known to get a second FLYING plane to go with their "transportation" plane.

Yeah, and there is several service bulletins that require them to be removed, piper had them on a lot of models and most converted to round wires because of vibration and breaking problems. If you want to go fast buy a mooney or a bonanza, most people on here either are too cheap or too poor to own those so they stick with a Taylorcraft. Me I am too poor to own anything else..

Lots of planes use streamline wires on the empennage, but they are expensive.

The bungies don't oscillate like springs do...that's why they still used bungies on a lot of airplanes and don't convert them. The Burls kit for a cub is around $4,000 Tim

This is the type of landing gear suspension I would actually like to put on my L-2. Does anyone have a set of plans for this and could it be done, legally, without converting to experimental? I could still use the original covers so from the outside it would look the same.

Paul is right....but it is also tradition to poke at any other model or manufacture plane on these groups. Honest, it is ALL in fun and not serious.

Or God forbid one of those suck and blow flying blow torches!!!!! (except Naval Aviators.....and a few of Uncle Sams Misguided Children. They get a pass and don't bounce anyway, they ALWAYS approach way too fast and then do a controlled crash)

There have been Taylorcrafts with spring steel & carbon fiber Taylorcraft looked at the Wittman Tailwind way back in the 40's and had ideas ready if needed.
Around here we had the sketches made up to solve a problem that never existed : WE designed a retractable landing gear for a Bensen B-8M "Gyrocopter". :yahoo:

the good suspension is aoss it is varying thickness of plastic disk to tune in the exact fell you like. very popular in supercub world. check out these on www.supercub.org lots of discussion

There was somebody in Alaska the had a set up for the Super cubs using visco-elastic disk stacked together. They had a booth at Oshkosh a few years ago. I think they also had a replacement for the Taylorcraft tail brace wires. Tom

Don't know the specifications on these springs but the Spacewalker has a max gross of 1450 pounds. My L-2 has max gross of 1300. I like this setup because it eliminates the bungies. Spring size could be adjusted as necessary. If I could get drawings I could figure out how to make them and test application. My L-2 is not flyable right now so it would be a good time to experiment.

Comparing those springs to the ones used on a formula racer (say 1100 lbs spread over 4 springs) makes the size look totally inadequate. Tell me I am missing something here.

Here is a closeup of the Spacewalker landing gerar. Would be easy to install on my L-2 and could be covered to look stock. If anyone knows of drawings it would be appreciated.

The nice thing about tail wires is horizontal tails generally lift DOWN. The wires most likely to be corroded, get dings and NOT be inspected as well are the bottom ones (the ones NOT in tension most of the time). I would expect many more lower wires than upper have failed and since the top wires take the most load, the planes haven't been brought down.
For once we get lucky, but I wouldn't push it. A flair with a broken upper wire could easily result in the stab bending down and a bunt into the ground. A really bad day!
