  • Exhaust system

I know that exhaust systems problems have been beaten to death. So knowing that, I'll ask once again. Where can I find a shroud that will fit my original pipe, or should I just bite the bullet and buy a complete new SS exhaust and shroud? I talked to Sonny Porch and his system looks great but when all is said and done, it will be more then $1,695. plus $55. S&H. Aerospace Welding was even more, $2,350. If I could find a good serviceable shroud, I would be happy to go that route. Any and all sugestions are welcome.
    This is for my 1941 BC12D 65.
    Thanks,

Have you considered attempting to make a new shroud yourself? IF you use O aluminum, it is dead soft and very easy to work. You could make a female mold out of body filler and hammer it out with a small rawhide mallet. If you don't weld, you would have to pay someone to weld the two lower parts together, but you would still have spent less than the figures you quoted.

How about a one plane STC for the dual pipes used on Luscombes? That is what I have on mine, and it solves a lot of problems and at least one big one forever. I think the hardware would run about a $1200 unless I'm forgetting some major part. Everything keeps going up by leaps and bounds though. Likely develop a few more ponies from your engine too.

        Contact this guy...

Taylorcraft BC-Series or DC-Series Conversion to Dual Exhaust (Luscombe 8E-style) Comes with installation drawings and DER 8110-3 Approval ...

He does engineering work for field approvals, including the luscombe exhaust on the taylorcraft. Worth every penny and not too expensive.
Better heat, easier to maintain, and cheaper parts. Can't go wrong.

But, I am originally a Luscombe guy who has seen the light of the Taylorcraft....

        Anyone building a hybrid?

If an approved part is readily available for sale, 21.303 is not suppose to be an option

What is upsetting is how do they figure $800+ for an aluminum heat shroud is "readily available"?
Can it be considered un-available because the cost is so high you can't afford it?
                      Hank

I guess I just woke up grumpy this morning, but I am fixing two of the shrouds right now and the edges and fit are a mess.

Heres the source for Luscombe Exhaust conversion paperwork. We have supported this conversion on at least 6 - BC models and 4 - DC (L-2) models. All report good results.

                              Re: Exhaust system

First off, thanks for your input on this exhaust problem that we all
share. As far as making and repairing my system, I have tried using O aluminum. First I made a mold then cut a paper pattern, then using O alum. I worked the O until I found it's beond my ability, I give up. Now if I could find an original shroud, I would consider buying it, or at lease the one piece I don"t have ( see pictuers ). At this point, Luscombe looks like the way to go.
Please continue with your coments and sugestions, belive me, it realy helps.

                              Thanks'
