  • Alaska WOW !!!

I want to post a formal, public thanks to AK Brew, Steve Long, Bob Picard, and a few other AK tribe folks for making my trip to the Anchorage show an outstanding experience!

AK Brew was kind enough to allow me to stay at his house, pet his dogs, and more or less babysit me for the entire five days I was there. He arranged an informal BBQ for me, and TWO incredible local flights.

On Friday, T-craft tribe member Steve Long flew me from Anchorage to Talkeetna in his gorgeous F-21 for lunch. On the way home, Steve arranged for me to fly back with Don DeVoe in his full off-road PA-14, so I could get my first gen-u-wine Alaska river gravel bar landing on big tires. Steve, thanks so much... and thank Don again for me !

The Alaska Airmen's Association show was a big success for me on both a personal and business level.

Then on Monday, Jim took me out for one of the best sightseeing flights I've ever had...

Anchorage/Lake Hood out to fly over Sarah's house at Lake Louise, then to land at Wolf Lake to say hello to Larry (WLAS),

Then out through the Knik river gorge to a gravel riverbed landing at "the picnic table",

Then out over the spectacular Knik glacier and bright blue swimming pools of melted ice,

Then up over the thousands of huge ice spires and crevasses of Lower Knik Glacier

Then up the untouched snowfields of upper Knik Glacier,

Then over the mountain peaks and down to the untouched miles of coastline and black sand beaches of Prince William Sound, past hundreds of small icebergs floating away from a nearby coastal glacier,

Then across the Sound to the town of Whittier where cold water divers are trained,

Then through Portage Pass and into the Turnagain Arm of the Cook Inlet,

Then to the Hope airport, a narrow rectangle gut into 100 foot Spruce trees with a dark dirt/gravel strip at the bottom,

Then a brisk walk into and out of the tiny town of Hope, Alaska (closed until May 15),

And then finally back through Turnagain Arm, across the City of Anchorage, and into Lake Hood airstrip.

All I can say is "Freakin' WOW !!!" I will try to post pictures of this flight soon.

Jim I cannot thank you enough ! I will never be able to repay even a fraction of your generosity and kindness. There's nothing in the lower 48 I could ever show you that could hold a candle to Alaska in Springtime. I'm in your debt,

That's why I love Alaska. Prettiest place on earth. I used to give aerial tours of Glacier Bay and had multiple passengers state that they had traveled the entire world and this surpassed anything they had ever experienced. Of course I enjoyed each and every tour myself and used to try to fly each one a bit different so I was always seeing something new for myself. It is a wonderful place...someday I'll get back there.

              Hank,

              Roughly 42 hours each way.

Next spring. Give me a call, I'll meet you somewhere out here and go with you. I should have mine flying by then and ready for the trip. It is on my list of things to do.

Hank there are a few people who have done the flight from the Lower 48 to AK in a T-craft... Jim told me Steve Long did it with his F-21, and my friend AK Jack took the BC-85 I sold him back to Fairbanks through the interior of Canada.

All that being said, I understand there are a few stretches between fuel stops that are further than even 24 gallons of fuel will comfortably take you.

I'm not experienced with this trip in any way, so I can't say for sure... but I believe that you would have to carry gas cans in the plane. Or, perhaps somebody knows of a car gas station in one of those stretches that is close enough to a landable road.

The big big deal in my mind would be to research it thoroughly with people who have done it, and have one's ego and pride locked away someplace temporarily I made sure I sat on the correct side of the airliner at the window going both ways, and although breathtakingly beautiful - the scenery left no doubt that it was absolutely intolerant of any errors or poor judgment. The 100+ foot trees went all the way to the water (that's COLD water BTW), without a trace of human infrastructure for 99% of the flight up and down the coast.

Jim informed me that something like only 8% of Alaska is within 10 or 15 miles of any kind of road. That part of Canada's BC west coast must be about the same. I saw a few airports with little towns, but they were some distance apart.

I wouldn't be frightened to make that trip on the coast, but I'd sure be prepared with the SPOT gadget and survival equipment. My engine would have a fresh full tune-up before I left VA, and I'd be watching the trends across the lower 48 so I knew exactly what I had before leaving Washington state.

Perhaps Taylorcraft tribe people from AK, Canada and anyone who has flown the coast route or the AlCan highway route can chime in here and correct any errors or wrong assumptions on my part.

Bill.. Sorry I didn't have more time to talk, but it's a busy time of the year,With all the float changes, now that the ice is out. Nice meeting you even if you didn't remember me from Fun and Sun. I've have flown from here to oshkosh and back and it's 40 hours of flight time one way and It took me about one week to get there, with weather and all.

I think I may want to do some shorter (MUCH shorter) trips first. Those should be followed by some in company with other folks in similar planes. Maybe I will go for Oshkosh first!

                        Re: Alaska WOW !!!

I flew my L2-B from Port Orchard, Washington to Anchor Point, Alaska about ten years ago. It was a challenge but doable. The L2 only carries 14 gallons of gas so I had a five gallon can strapped in the back seat. I followed the highway and did not use the "trench". Fuel was never a problem as I planned all the legs for under 200 miles and always found a place to land and get fuel, mostly car gas. I only had to land on the highway twice. I landed in a place named Prophet River, British Columbia to wait out a snow storm for two days on the 7th of July, I parked in front of the motel and waited out the storm. The second time I landed on the highway was at Eureka Lodge to eat some of their delicious ribs. Although Eureka has an airstrip it was in such bad shape that I elected to use the highway. It's not illegal to land on the highway in Alaska as long as you don't interfere with any traffic. The best flight planning for this kind of short hop trip is to refer to the "Alaska Airmens Logbook" and the "Milepost". They contain information that is not listed in any official aeronautical publications such as the condition of the many 3000' X 300' airstrips that were built along the Alcan to support construction of the highway. The Canadian charts list them as abandoned when in fact they are maintained by the locals and were in quite good shape when I used them. It was a beautiful enjoyable trip. The only regret is that I didn't get to have someone along with me to share the adventure.

I did remember you Larry, it was just that I didn't realize it was at Sun n Fun where we met. I had figured that I met you a couple of days before at the trade show, since I saw and spoke to about 1000 people over 2 days. Being a little slow mentally, I didn't associate people from Alaska with a Florida trade show.

Or was it the Puyallup show in Washington a few weeks before that, or Copperstate last October? I don't know anymore...

It was a pleasure taking you up to Talkeetna that day, Bill. I'm always looking for excuses to fly and I'm sure Don feels the same way. I'll pass your thanks on to him.

Too bad you couldn't have stayed for the VAldez airshow. The weather was phenomenal this year and there were tons of cubs and 180's/185's there. I'm sure you could have sold more of your flap handle extenders. The short take off and land contest was a hoot. A guy got his cub in the air in 49 ft and landed in 63 and that was with almost no wind! Hope you can come back next year!
