  • Aileron rigging

I am in the final stages of restoring a BC 12 D. I have installed the wings and connected the aileron cables but the ailerons a drooping about 3/4 inches. How much droop is acceptable? What adjustments can be made to correct this? I also noticed the ailerons were a little stiff when moving the yoke as compared to my Swift. Would sincerely appreciate any comments. I owned a TCraft and got my private lic in 1957 and now have a son who fell in love the this TCraft and anxious to get it into the air.

Thank you so very much.... bob price

PS: I sent a similar email to "RAGWING" then discovered this link..

I set mine to droop 1/4", the cables are not supposed to be tight, just not sagging. You have to adjust the cables above the cabin to get them both right and the yolks centered. Tim

      Re: Aileron rigging

Hello Bob, and welcome to the font of all Taylorcraft knowledge (where have you been all this time during your resoration? )

Tim pretty much hits it on the head...1/4 inch droop will see you good in flight. A lot of ailerons are rigged too tight. The aileron cable routing is quite convoluted (as you appreciate). Personally, I like my system quite slack to minimise friction, but not so slack as to have too much backlash (lost motion). A bit of trial & error might find you the sweet spot in your aeroplane.

Have you got any photos? We love to see restorations in progress.

      Regards,
      Rob

The guys have it. Not too tight or they get "heavy" Not too loose or they get "loose" Rig to fly in trail. May take a few test flights to get it right. Have fun. Good old airplane.

          Re: Aileron rigging

Many thanks to all of you for the excellent information you provided. It will be of great help in getting this beautiful bird properly riged. I have found another problem with left aileron bell crank. I wobbles when I move the aileron up and down. I could not find a drawinf detail but assume I need a new bearing/sleeve/bolt? Thanks again for your support. The foundation web page is awesome!

          sincerely,.... bob price

Bob, it sounds like you just need to adjust the stud ball and socket assembly, they are adjustable. There is no bearing that I know of. Tim
