  • oil pump gear

I ordered a new set of oil pump gears for my about to be A-65 and received a perfect drive gear and this oil pump driven gear. It was full of chips and burrs which I rubbed down before I returned it for replacement. The replacement gear which I just received is about half better. Both gears came in a Continental parts box. It creeps me out to think that I would put this gear in my new engine.

Would this be serviceable? Will it wear in? I know that some one on this forum has real life experience with this situation.

    ???

    Thanks in advance

Looks to me like it's been broached but not ground afterwards.

That's NOT a gear, it isn't even a paper weight. I would be calling the supplier and asking him to personally check the next one and ask him to consider if he would fly HIS family behind it before he ships it.
Be friendly, mistakes happen (sometimes they even happen twice) but he needs to consider his companies liability if a half baked A&P (and we know there are some out there) had installed that gear.
I wouldn't drive with that gear in a car glove box, much less fly it in an airplane engine.

Stay polite and friendly! You need to assume he is on your side and will be as upset by the quality as you are. They don't look in the box before they ship. HE has a problem with HIS supplier and he needs to read them the riot act.

Yes those gears are about the same class of tools as any of there electric or electronics testing products. Marv

I beleive Robert has the correct answer.
It looks like a run is missing the grinding operation.
Have your supplier look at all his supply before shipping you any more.

              All,
There are Continental boxes and there are Continental boxes. The bad guys are not only counterfiting the parts but the containers as well. The FEDS maybe interested. We actually had the FBI involved in a parts counterfiting issue that we got into with some Allison Model 250 parts 10 years ago or so.

                Re: oil pump gear

                Hi Mike

The people that I have been buying my parts from have unusual business practices, but they have always been straight up with me for the past 10 years. I don't know if they checked out the parts before they shipped them. I am not going to give them a problem over a simple mistake.

I don't want to get the gossip mill going so I'm not going to name them. However, If it turns out that there is an ongoing problem, I will advise caution to members of the forum.

I have run into a series of major problems with this engine. Everything from badly machined rocker arms (had to go back), missmatched connecting rod bearings, Incomplete overhaul of the cases (studs not checked) bad oil pump gears (new items) and a lot more.

I got the same shaft as everlyone else on the Mags. I did the trade in on Slick mags. Still new in the box and an AD comes out. Slick tells me don't worry about it, you are going to put enough hours on it to need to replace the brushes. If you want you can buy a set of brushes for about $9.00 and replace them now, but you'll have to re-time the mags.

However...all that I need to finish up is the oil pump gear and rear case assembly and I'll be ready to hang the engine. Hot damm!!!

                luck to us all.
