    Re: Speaking of GPS...

GPS is cool in the 182 I fly since it has a Garmin 430 in it now. But when we fly the puddle jumpers, I still fly "IFR" with a map

I use a Lowrance 500 velcro'd to the panel. Light, easy to use, and it seems to go for about 6-8 hrs on 2 AA batteries. It's also got a Jepp database with obstacles on it on an SD card that you can update. It's monochrome and about the size of 2 decks of cards. Bought it for $150 on eBay a year or so ago.

I still fly with a sectional, too. It's really nice to have something else to cross-check though. Built in alerts for airspace and obstacles are a good thing, too.

At Christmastime, Gulf Coast had a sale of Lowrance 600C's. Got mine for $250 after the rebate. I don't know if there is anything like that going on now or not, but even at the $500 price it's a pretty nice little unit....Jepp database, terrain & everything, in color.

Dan - tell me about your transponder setup. I assume it's portable. I understand they drain batteries quickly. True? What model? - Mike

              Mike,
Here's a link to a lot of transponder discussion on the forum and a description of my portable box. http://vb.taylorcraft.org/showthread...icroair&page=2

I have a 196 and I will need to goto a 396 when ADS-B comes on line in 2013, then I will have inflight weather and virtual aircraft avoidance...It is coming to an airspace near you!
